There are two issues with the printer server feature. This is a very useful feature for the entire network to share one printer (without requiring any particular computer to be turned on). However, the Barricade firmware doesn't handle printers that sleep. If a printer is in sleep mode when the Barricade resets, the Barricade refuses to recognize the printer as connected. This is rather annoying because most modern Energy-Star compliant printers do sleep. Another problem with the firmware is that when you try to connect to it via the Unix lpr utility, the Barricade always wastes two pages of paper, one blank and one printing a banner. All email messages sent to SMC did not get any reply. The Barricade also refuses to recognize the number-of-copies feature of Unix-like lpr connection. This makes it difficult to print midterms and other documents in multiple copies.
..
I have tried this myself using my Canon Laser Printer, however, it cannot work at all, according to the technical support, the print server is not compatible with my printer. Therefore if you want to make use of this print server, I suggest you to email to their technical support to check the compatibility.
