S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology.
If your BIOS and hard drive utilize this technology, there will be a quick verification of the drive for integrity when you start your system. However, this test is not as thorough as using the Data Lifeguard Tools diagnostics.
The idea behind the S.M.A.R.T. technology is to provide an early warning system relating to a possible hard drive failure. All Western Digital drives are S.M.A.R.T. version 2.0 compatible. However many systems still utilize the S.M.A.R.T. version 1.0 in the BIOS, and this may cause problems. You may contact your BIOS manufacturer to see if there is a BIOS revision available for your system; alternately you may disable S.M.A.R.T. within the BIOS.
Whenever you get a warning message from the system during POST, we recommend that you back up all data as soon as possible, and then run the diagnostic software on the Data Lifeguard Tools diskette. If you get an error code using this software, chances are the drive will need to be replaced.
If you do not receive an error code, the drive has passed all tests, and the integrity of the drive should be intact. However, if you are uncomfortable using your drive, we will replace it for you, if it is under warranty.
