Dolby Digital is a 5.1-channel surround sound format, and is the standard for DVD-Video. Dolby Digital features up to five discrete (independent) channels (front center, front left, front right, surround left, surround right; giving it the "5" designation)full frequency sound (with respect to the range of human hearing, which ideally ranges from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz), plus a sixth channel for low frequency effects (LFE). The LFE signal is usually reserved for the subwoofer speaker(s), or those speakers capable of reproducing low frequency ranges. The low frequency effects channel gives Dolby Digital the ".1" designation. The ".1" signifies that the sixth channel is not full frequency, as it contains only deep bass frequencies (3 Hz to 120 Hz).

Om ook nog even wat interessants voor de topicstarter te posten... Ik heb het volgende gevonden (gezocht op de Audio chip, niet het moederbord):
Notice, though, that in the Ports section of the spec table above, there are lots of parentheses in confusing formations around the sound port specs. That's because the AK35GTR supports a range of audio output options, including six-channel positional audio for a 5.1 speaker setup, but it does so with only four audio ports—three on the motherboard, and a single port via an expansion header that fits into an open PCI slot cover. In order to support six-channel audio, for instance, the AK35GTR routes the two front channels out of the Line Out port, the two rear channels out of the Line In port, and the woofer and center channels out of the expansion header port.
Dit gaat dus niet specifiek over jouw moederbord, maar aangezien het een veel toegepaste soundchip (CMI 8738) is zal dit verhaal wel opgaan voor jouw moederbord denk ik...
