A yellow exclamation point overlays the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition shield in the system tray
Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) through login scripts to a client, the shield in the system tray is overlaid with a yellow exclamation point.
Solution:
This problem may have several causes. The most common causes are:
The virus definitions files used by NAVCE are corrupt or incomplete.
NAVCE has not installed completely.
Symantec Event files need to be updated.
NAVCE is running on a Terminal Server.
NAVCE is failing to load due to a timing conflict with another application or driver.
A file named Program (no extension) is in the root of C: (Delete the file).
To correct a problem with virus definitions:
1. Download and run the Intelligent Updater from the following location:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html
2. Reboot the Computer. If the Yellow exclamation point returns, then continue to the next section.
Adjust the IRPStackSize (Windows NT/2000 only)
Under Windows NT, examine the value for IRPStackSize, and change it as recommended in the document How to change the IRPStackSize for Windows NT/2000.
If adjusting the IRPStackSize and then rebooting fails to solve the problem, or if the client is running Windows 95/98/Me, then continue to the next section.
To verify that NAVCE has installed correctly on Windows 95/98/Me:
1. Use Regedit to browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
2. In the pane on the right, look for values for Rtvscn95.exe and Defwatch.exe.
3. If these values are missing, the reinstall NAVCE.
NOTE: It may be necessary to uninstall NAVCE and boot to Safe mode before reinstalling.
To verify that NAVCE has installed correctly on Windows NT/2000/XP:
1. Use Regedit to browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
2. Look for the following keys in the left pane:
Defwatch
NAVAP
NAVAPEL
NAVENG
NAVEX15
Norton AntiVirus Server
3. If any of the above registry keys are missing, then uninstall and reinstall NAVCE.
Update Symantec Event Files
To update Symantec Event files, see the Symantec Knowledge Base document How to update the Symevnt files for steps on downloading and updating the files.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed on a Terminal Server
See the document Does Norton AntiVirus support Windows Terminal Servers or Citrix WinFrame servers?
To troubleshoot timing conflicts with another application or driver (Windows 95/98
/me only):
On Windows 95, NAVCE may fail to load at startup due to a timing conflict. See the document How to troubleshoot problems that occur at startup when Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition is installed for steps to identify and resolve these issues.
NOTE: If Novell NetWare clients are installed and have the yellow exclamation point, then try updating the NetWare client to a newer version. Several customers have reported that this solved the problem when they updated to NetWare client version 4.8e.
For additional information, please see the document How to determine if Virus Definitions used by Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition are corrupted.
