Question
BF1942 (PC) - CRASH - Crash to desktop with an error Beep - ** Windows XP **
Answer
PROBLEM:
After showing a full black screen the game crashes back to the Windows desktop and an error Beep is heard. The computer is using Windows XP.
SOLUTION:
This indicates a trouble with the refresh rate of the game. Some users may have a program installed that forces a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz (e.g. Refresh Force) if so make sure that his is closed down before running the game.
Make sure that you have closed any programs or tasks running in the background as sometimes one of the programs can conflict with the game. Background applications such as anti-virus programs are often the cause of conflicts. With this particular issue, programs like "Force Refresh" and other applications have been known to cause trouble.
Hold down the Ctrl, Atl, and Delete keys at the same time
This will bring up the "Task Manager", follow the steps bellow in order:
1) Click the "Processes"
2) Click on the User Name button to sort by user name
3) Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or other user names. Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.
4) Click on END PROCESS
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.
Next set the Windows refresh rate to 60 Hz:
Right click on your Desktop and Select "Properties". Then click the "Settings" tab. Click the "Advanced..." button. Then go to the "Monitor" tab. In the drop down box below where it Says "Monitor Settings", change that box to 60 Hz and try running the game again. This should solve your issue.
Then, you will want to download the latest Patch by clicking the "Update" button from the Battlefield 1942 Menu that launches when you put the CD in or when you click the icon on your desktop.
The latest patch will allow you to change your in game refresh rate, however you would have to edit a game configuration file. If you wish to do so, please follow these steps below (not recommended if the game already launches correctly):
Go to: My computer, then C drive, then Program Files, EA GAMES, Battlefield 1942, then the Settings folder. In that folder you will see a file called VideoDefault.con. You will want to double click this file to open it. If it asks you what Program to use (in Windows XP you will first want to choose "Display a list of programs for me to choose from), choose Wordpad. In there you will see a line with this command:
renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0
Change the 0 to a 1 and then Save the file. This will allow refresh rates above 60 Hz in the game.

PROBLEM:
The game will crash back to the Windows Desktop when trying to start a Single player Instant Battle.
SOLUTION:
The first thing to check is to ensure that the computer has a supported 32 MB video card with hardware T&L and a 24 bit z-buffer. The game is extremely demanding and currently only the ATI Radeon, NVIDIA GeForce and Matrox Parhelia video chips are supported. If the computer does not have one of these types of video cards it will be unable to run properly.
To find out what type of video card you have: Go to Start and select Run and type DXDIAG and press Ok. Along the top of the tool click on the tab that says Display. On the left side near the top it will state the name. Also note the Aprox. Total Memory a couple lines below the name.
