Ik weet het! Het is
Maar het MOET er gewoon opkomen. Het is voor een klant, die alles nog met '95 draait. De programmatuur die die klant draait, werkt enkel onder '95.
Nu komt er dus een nieuw systeem (p4-1400) waar dus ook '95 op moet. Maar ik krijg het er niet op.
Ik krijg steeds de fout:
Tijdens het initialiseren van apparaat IOS: Er is een beschermingsfout van Windows opgetreden. U dient de computer opnieuw op te starten.
Is het uberhaupt wel mogelijk? Win95 op een Pentium IV

Welke Win 95 versie is het: Win 95 OSR 2.5 is beduidend beter dan de eerdere versies.

Suggestie: ISDN adaptor er eens uit halen, Windows 95 installeren en dan de ISDN adaptor er weer inzetten en installeren.

SYMPTOMS
When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:
Initializing Device IOS: Windows Protection Error
When you try to restart your computer in Safe mode, you may receive the same error message.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if a virus hooked the INT21h or INT13h chain before Microsoft Windows is loaded, an unsafe device driver is detected, or a protected-mode driver is missing or damaged in the Iosubsys file located in the Windows\System\Iosubsys folder.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, you must minimize the amount of time to locate the origin of this error message, as well as other error messages. First, focus on any obvious changes that occurred in your computer just before you received the error message. If you installed new software or hardware, the installation process may have performed some action that may be the cause of your computer's current problem.
The same situation may have occurred if you removed outdated software or hardware. If changes occurred in your computer, revert to your original configuration prior to the display of the error message. For example, if you installed a new processor, install the previous processor back into your computer and observe if the error message is resolved when you restart your computer.
NOTE: If the error is resolved, contact the hardware manufacturer to ensure that you are using the most recent basic input/output system (BIOS) for your computer.
After you have eliminated the preceding behavior as the potential source of your computer's problem behavior, try to restart your computer in Safe mode by performing the following steps:
Restart your computer. For a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer, when you observe the "Starting Windows 95" message, press F8, and then on the Startup menu, click Command Prompt Only. For a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer is finished the power-on self test (POST), and then on the Startup menu, click Command Prompt Only.
If you receive the same error message when you try to restart your computer in Safe mode, go to the next step (Step 3). If you can restart your computer in Safe mode, clean boot your computer to identify the cause of your issue.

Make a Bootlog.txt file and examine it to identify the cause of the error. Restart your computer using the steps outlined in the preceding step 1 and when the Startup menu is displayed, click Step-By-Step Confirmation.
Press Y and ENTER after each line is displayed:

Create a Startup Log file (Bootlog.txt)?
Process your Startup device drivers (Config.sys)?

Load the Windows graphical user interface?

Use the command prompt to view the C:\Bootlog.txt file to identify the problem. At the command prompt, type:
edit bootlog.txt
Press ENTER, and then examine the Bootlog.txt file for "Initcomplete=" entries. These entries may provide clues as to the cause of the problem.
Each "Initcomplete=" entry must have a matching "Initcompletesuccess=" entry on a successful start up of your system. If the last line in the Bootlog.txt file displays an "InitFailure" or "LoadFailure" message for a driver, write down the driver's name, exit the Bootlog.txt file, press ALT+F, press X, click OK, and then search for the driver.
NOTE: Some virtual device drivers (VxDs) are required for Windows to run properly. These required VxDs are loaded automatically and do not require a registry entry. If one of the following drivers are listed as "LoadFailure", go to Step 9.

If you do not find any unsuccessful attempts in the Bootlog.txt file, or if after you rename a file you still receive the error, try to locate an Ios.log file in the Windows directory. The Ios.log file may help you to identify a virus or it may contain information describing why the protected-mode disk driver could not load.

Ik heb het uiteindelijk nog opgelost
Ik zeg niet dat dit de enige juiste oplossing is, maar voor de mensen die dit misschien ook ooit nog eens moeten doen, hier een beschrijving:
Het installeren van Windows 95 OSR2.5 op een Pentium IV
- Let op: Voor het installeren van Windows '95 MOET u USB uitschakelen in de BIOS.
- Men begint met de gebruikelijk dingen om windows te installeren:
Formatteren van harde schijf (optioneel)
Setup van Windows 95 starten
De computer zal 2 keer opnieuw opgestart worden door setup:
Tijdens één van deze 2 reboots zal Windows crashen met de fout:
"Fout bij het initialiseren van het het apparaat IOS
Beschermingsfout van Windows
U dient de computer opnieuw op te starten"
Krijgt u de bovenstaande fout moet u het volgende uitvoeren:
Start de computer opnieuw op
Druk op F8 als u de melding "Windows wordt opgestart" krijgt
Kies voor MS-DOS prompt
In DOS moet u het bestand C:\windows\system\vmm32\ios.vxd vervangen door een nieuwere versie
Heeft u dit bestand nog niet op diskette, kunt u dat middels deze link downloaden:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads.
Hier kiest u de download: "Windows 95 update for AMD-K6-2/350"
Dit bestandje kunt u uitpakken met bijvoorbeeld Winzip
Hier staat dan ook het bestandje ios.vxd bij
zet dit bestand op diskette, en vervang het op de betreffende computer waar Win95 op moet
Als u het bestand vervangen heeft, kunt u de computer opnieuw opstarten.
Setup/Windows zal nu wel doorlopen.
Windows is nu correct geinstalleerd.
Wilt u ook nog gebruik maken van USB onder Windows '95 moet u de volgend stappen uitvoeren:
1. Ga onder Windows naar de Windows CD.
2. Zoek de directory: \OTHER\UPDATES\USB
3. Hier voert u het bestand: usbsupp.exe uit
4. De computer wordt nu opnieuw opgestart.
5. Windows KAN nu bij de herstart crashen. Is dit het geval, voer dan de volgende stappen uit:
1. Start Windows op in veilige modus
2. Run het bestand dat u zojuist gedownload heeft
Let op: niet de uitgepakte versie, maar gewoon de losse .exe
3. Herstart Windows.
4. Windows zal nu correct opstarten
6. Windows is nu correct opgestart.
7. Herstart de computer, en zet USB aan in de BIOS
8. Windows zal nu bij het opstarten de USB poorten detecteren, en installeren.
Windows is nu correct geinstalleerd met USB-support

Thanx voor posten v/d oplossing. Hoe ben je er trouwens achter gekomen dat je die nieuwe ios.vxd moest hebben? En dan nog wel een "Windows 95 update for AMD-K6-2/350"

Is het niet makkelijker om gewoon de drivers van het moederbord op de bijgeleverde ASUS cd-rom te installeren ?? Dan is alles direct voor elkaar.

Er stond ergens op de compaq site ( ) dat de fix voor AMD k6 ook voor pentium 4 werkt. dus...
Het duurde trouwens ff voor ik erachter kwam dat ik de .exe gewoon kon openen met winzip... Want onder safemode opstarten lukte ook niet, dus ik kon dat bestand niet runnen ook....
En die asus cd? misschien had dat ook gewerkt, maar dat heb ik niet geprobeerd, ben al blij dat het nu werkt....
