Heb exact hetzelfde probleem (en ik weet nog iemand). Heb uitgebreide correspondentie gehad met promise (telefonisch en via mail). Dit allemaal in maart/april 2002.
Laatste bericht van hun: ligt aan windows XP, wacht u maar op service pack 1. Hieronder de meest interessante mails in chronologische volgorde (correspondentie met promise via support@promise.nl).

Just bougt a Promise Ultra133 TX2 controller, which I installed in my PC running Windows XP professional. Followed the directions in the manual. When I connect the harddisk to the ultra133 controller and reboot the PC, everything looks allright till the bootscreen of windows XP appears. Harddrive is making some noice like its reading, than it stops. The moving blue bar of windows XP keeps moving forever. Sometimes the harddrive led is lightens up, but don't here the drive reading. Moving drive back to normal IDE controller boots fine.
Tried several possibilities like:
- placing card in another PCI slot,
- changing settings in BIOS
- resetting BIOS
- loading BIOS with defaults
- connecting drive back to normal IDE controller and re-installing the driver
- reading all possible related items on promise support website.
- searching on the web for similar problems
- disconnecting not needed devices like CD-ROM
but no success.
The specs of the PC are as follows:
- Tyan thunder 100 motherboard (onboard sound, SCSI, network, 6 PCI slots, one AGP)
- PII 400 Mhz
- 384 Mb RAM
- VGA: Matrox Marvel G200 AGP
- no other PCI cards installed
- drive: Maxtor 740DX 60 Gb
- cd-rom drive 8 speed IDE
So please can you help me to solve this problem? Would appriciate if you send a reply that you are working on it.

Did you try with Windows 2000 drivers ?
Are you running latest BIOS ?
Does it work if there's no drive attached ?

1. Just tried win2000 drivers. No sollution, still same problem.
2. Yes, motherboard is running with latest BIOS from manufacturer (Tyan).
3. Yes, it scans system and sees no drive attached. In hardware list of win
XP its listed correctly without problems like IRQ conflicts.

I would advise to update drivers then shutdown the system, attach the drives

Just tried it, but no luck. Still same problem.
I used the "update driver" in windows XP to install this beta driver.

In order to get these new drivers working, you will need to get around a
buggy Windows behavior :
-in the folder options of Windows Explorer, in the "View" tab, check "Show
Hidden files and folders".
-go to C:/Winnt/inf/, which is a hidden dir, right click on the left side of
the window on the "inf" dir, choose "Search"
-in the "containing text" field, input "promise"(without the quotes) and hit
"search now", then delete all the *.inf files you see.
-go to device manager, remove all Promise entries
-restart the system, windows will ask for drivers, point to new drivers you
unpacked before, then when it's done, restart.

system found 5 inf files:
-oem6.inf
-oem7.inf
-oem8.inf
-mshdc.inf
-pnpscsi.inf
Looking into the inf files I decided only to delete the first 3, as the last
2 seems to be part of the default windows XP installation.
For the rest I did as you asked. Still no success.
Booting in safe mode works. Booting in normal mode not.

I forwarded your email to the engineers but didn't get an answer, yet.
Anyway, in the meantime, I've found a forum topic you might be interested in :

Basically, they say WinXP doesn't work properly with SCSI adapters, and need to wait for Service Pack.
Keep in mind that the Ultra controllers are recognised as SCSI, and the chip itself is a stripped down version of our RAID chip.
So, if I were you, I would try with Windows 2000, just to see if XP was the problem.

Interesting topic. What I read from it is that there are performance problems which seems to be related to windows XP and that a few users have called microsoft. The fix microsoft proposed didn't work, so may be its new to them to. Also one guy installed other hardware and problems were gone, so may be also combination with chipset/vga card. So to my opinion no conclusion can be drawn yet (although windows xp seems to be involved).
I already thought about trying windows 2000, but I have a system with complete video editing software and programming software installed and It will cost me a lot of time to re-install and re-configure this software.
I will anything to help you, but installing to windows 2000 is not an option, as I want to work under windows XP. I bought a controller which must work under windows XP, so I will wait for your tech support. Certainly because I know more people have the same problem.

I installed win2000 pro UK in formatted partition. Followed the instructions
in the ulta133 manual for installing the drivers and connecting the harddisk
to the controller. It works without any problems. I didn't change any
hardware.
So it looks like a winxp related problem.
What will be the next step, i.e. how will the problem be solved?

I cannot say that I am pleased with it:
1. the card is sold as windows xp compatible
2. the reply you gave is based on discussion in a public discussion forum,
which mostly goes about bad performance, not about not working controllers.
I would like a more "scientific" reply from the engineering department from
promise
If I had known this before I wouldn't have bought the card, so I want to
sent the card back to promise (if I don't get better support than links to
public forums) and get my money back. How do we arrange this?
