1. There isn't a predetermined lifespan of SAH. However,
I've been working here with the Berkeley SETI group well
before SAH was around. It's not the only project we're
working on. Despite the lame website, we are actively
working on SERENDIP (which has a much wider frequency
bandwidth than SAH, but hardly the processing power), and
others around here are working on various optical SETI
projects. That said, each of these sub projects eventually
die off due to arcane technology that could easily be
improved upon. When I first started working here, we were
doing final analysis on SERENDIP III. Now we're starting
work on building SERENDIP IV. That's only the span of
5 years, mind you.
2. The lifespans of these projects are partially determined
by funding, but really they die off due to stale technology.
Why keep looking at 10 million frequency bins when you can
look at 4000 million?
I'm not exactly sure now how we will phase into SETI@home II.
Perhaps stats will carry over in some form or another. On
one hand, it will be a shame for people who worked so hard
to start from scratch. On the other, it would be nice for
newcomers not to be disheartened when they find thousands of
people have a three year head start on them. There's also
issues about how to account the stats in SETI@home I. In
SAH II, credits will be more probably be more equitable,
as opposed to just 1 per work unit, regardless of workunit
length, cpu time spent on in, processing power, etc..
Maybe we can fold in some "historical" stats to new users
when they start SETI@home II.
Keep in mind, also, that SETI@home II will be based on a
framework that will include (hopefully countless) other
scientific projects from around the world. Users will be
able to switch between projects with ease, or have the
client rotate automatically. Credits really become an issue
here...
That's enough for now. Must head of to the lab..
