Topicstarter
Bij het opstarten van linux doet hij een poging om X te starten, de schermresolutie verandert een paar keer, en uiteindelijk wordt er naar tekst-modus overgeschakeld.

Als ik startx doe, geeft hij aan dat ik de XFree86.0.log eens moet bekijken, deze staat hieronder: (sorry van de lap tekst)

Omdat hierin stond dat hij te weinig geheugen zou hebben, heb ik free gedraaid

Het gaat hier om een P1-133 systeem met 48mb ram en een S3 Trio64V+ videokaart.

Ik wou deze pc gaan gebruiken voor mp3 met remote control en nog wat internetten/msn/tekstverwerking en stuff.

Ik ben nogal een linux-n00b, dus als iemand me stap voor stap zou willen uitleggen hoe ik dit zaakje aan de praat kan krijgen zou dat heel fijn zijn.

The what goes where now?

Welke XFree86 versie heb je? (als root: "X -version")
Hoe heb je X geconfigureerd? Probeer het eens met "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86".
Als dat ook niet helpt: gooi je /etc/X11/XF86Config (-4) eens online.

Ik ben net aan het proberen geweest. Ik denk dat het een driverprobleem is.
Ik heb drie verschillende drivers geprobeerd, S3trio; vga; vesa. S3trio werkte niet, vga ook niet (weer een andere foutmelding), en bij vesa deed hij heel vaag wat. (drie verschillende vage cursors over het scherm).

Ik denk dat ik op de 1 of andere manier aan drivers zal moeten komen voor de videokaart die ik heb, de S3Trio64V+ (S3 86C765).

Zou iemand mij daaraan kunnen helpen?

Oh jah, nog ff XF86Config-4, misschien dat iemand daar nog iets mee kan...

M.a.w. : Je hebt te weinig geheugen op je kaart zitten om een hoge resolutie te gebruiken IMHO. In de meeste biossen zit een optie, waarmee je je videokaart je ram-geheugen van je moederbord kan laten gebruiken ofzo, die heb ik nog nooit nodig gehad, maar misschien werkt het dan wel bij je :?

En anders kun je altijd nog 320 * 200 gaan gebruiken, p0rn fullscreen, wie wil dat nou niet ;)

Bij het kiezen van driver kan ik niet kiezen voor 's3', de enige optie is dan 's3virge'. Misschien heeft het iets te maken met de versie van Xfree86 die ik draai. In het bovenstaande document wordt gesproken over Xfree 3.3.6 en 4.2.0. Ik gebruik versie 4.1.0.1. Aangezien deze versie tussen twee andere ligt waar het wel zou moeten werken lijkt het me sterk dat het hieraan ligt. Misschien moet deze driver handmatig toegevoegd worden op de 1 of andere manier? Graag hulp.

Ow, die is inderdaad nieuw voor XFree 4.2.0. En de S3 Trio64V+ is niet ondersteund in XFree 4.1.0, wel in 4.2.0 en 3.3.6.

Je hebt dus twee opties: 3.3.6 (oudere versie) draaien of 4.2.0 (nieuwere versie) draaien. Alternatief kun je nog met de vesa driver klooien, dat is waarschijnlijk wel werkend te krijgen, maar fatsoenlijke driver heeft de voorkeur.

Voor 3.3.6 moet je de package xserver-s3 hebben.

Voor 4.2.0 kun je het beste de experimental packages nemen, daarvoor moet je in je sources.list

toevoegen.

Handmatig toevoegen kan ook (het is maar 1 file, ik wil hem wel online zetten), maar het kan zijn dat de XFree 4.2.0 drivers niet binary compatible zijn met XFree 4.1.0. In dat geval werkt dit dus niet.
