Quite frankly, I'm absolutely shocked that a white paper has surfaced on nVidia's website that gives the reader a general impression on the next generation product/architecture (OK, so I'm being sarcastic).
If you like to base things off specs, then you're going to like NV30...if you're a developer, you're definitely going to like what NV30 is bringing to the table. There's really not enough information, on either NV30 or R300, to really draw any comparisons @ this point in time; however, I digged around a couple of R300 previews, and came up with the following. Bear in mind, though, that these numbers should _not_ be taken as gospel...I think you can also assume that "CineFX" is synonymous with NV30.
Vertex Shaders
R300:
Max Instructions: Up to 1024 instructions with flow control.
Max Constants: 256
CineFX:
Max Instructions: Up to 65536 instructions with flow control.
Max Constants: 256
Pixel Shaders
R300: Up to 160 instructions with 128-bit F.P. precision.
CineFX: Up to 1024 instructions with 128-bit F.P. precision.
Color Precision
R300: Supports 128-bit floating point. Not sure if ATI supports 64-bit as well.
CineFX: Supports 64 and 128-bit floating point.
I strongly suspect that we're going to start hearing a lot more in the coming weeks, particularly as the Radeon 9700 boards are closer to becoming available. CineFX does, indeed, sound rather monsterous, as far as flexibility is concerned...we'll just have to wait to find out more definitive information.
