If you want good remote access performance at a low price and don't care much about ruffles and flourishes, then Xyplex's MaxServer8 is worth a look. This eight-port server lacks the bells and whistles of most competitive products but makes up for that with solid performance and a low per-port price.
We found this to be one of the more obstinate RAS servers to get up and running. One of the main reasons is that there's no integral modem support (you've got to individually and separately configure each of your modems before connecting them to the MaxServer8). And the unit doesn't ship with the necessary async/serial cables.
A basic Windows-based configuration tool, FocalPoint, is included to help set up the server. But there's no console port, so you have to establish a console session on one of the async/terminal ports (astonishingly, the cross-over cable for this connection is included). At one point during initial configuration we inadvertently disconnected our console session from the server. We had to Telnet in over the LAN interface to reconfigure the console session, and then reconnect via the console, in order to finish the setup.
Xyplex was still working on a Windows version of its ControlPoint management software that would fully support the MaxServer8 as we started testing. A beta version we received and looked at near the end of testing was still a little buggy.
While most fancy features other RAS servers support are not available with this one, there are a few nice surprises. For example, one MaxServer8 can function as the BootP server to download the system image into other RAS servers.
But this eight-port server could perform. We saw no degradation of per-port throughput when the server was fully loaded on all ports. Throughput for both FTP file and Web-page downloads was consistently excellent.
Conclusion
Readers who may want to use our findings in shopping for RAS servers should note the equal weighting for the five categories in Table 1. While lab-test series can't address all user environments, a closer fit with your requirements can be made by considering the relative importance of these criteria, then assigning more or less weight to each.
Wat denk je trouwens zelf .. RAS Server, klinkt als hub/switch
