Hoe heb je die bootdisk gedownload? Het is normaal gesproken een gzipped bestand (color.gz) maar als je heb met een browser hebt gedownload kan het zijn dat ie bij het downloaden gedecompressed is, en dus te groot.
Download hem anders een met een ftp client, zodat ie gegzipped over komt, en dan kun je hem zo op de flop rawriten

nee wacht, er is wat anders vaags. Op de ftp servers is de file rootdisks/color.gz een symlink naar ../isolinux/initrd.img, een bestand van inderdaad 2,3 MB, wat dus niet op een floppy past.
Je kunt eens proberen dat bestand zelf te gzippen, misschien past ie dan wel?

readme in de rootdisks dir eens zou ik zeggen
Daar staat:
If you are unable to boot the Slackware installation CD directly, you'll
need create these floppy disks in order to load the installer. In the past,
there's only been one rootdisk floppy called "color.gz", but now there are
5 floppy images, and you'll need all five of them. The reason for this is
that the size of the installer image after compression has exceeded 1.44MB,
and the kernel can either load a compressed rootdisk image, or an uncompressed
one that spans multiple floppy images.
Je moet dus install.1 t/m install.5 op floppen zetten
