Disk drives used in servers and workstations have very high rotational speeds. The air friction that is created, leads to a rapid temperature rise in the hard drive. This heat must be dissipated by a cooling process that places the drives directly in front of a stream of cold air. Even modern server enclosures and disk sub-system cabinets often have insufficient cooling.
When integrating hard drives into a personal computer type of enclosure, at least one drive slot should be left empty between all hard drives. It is important to cool effectively. One or two fans are not enough! Up to 150 linear feet per minute of airflow is specified for 10,000 RPM drives. You must confirm that the system enclosure is specified for using high speed drives.

"...The environment (rack, cabinet, or drawer) for the hard disk drive must provide cooling of the electronics and head/ disk assembly (HDA). Although the hard drive can be mounted in any orientation, when you install the drive, be sure to direct airflow that creates the least amount of airflow resistance, while providing airflow to the electronics and HDA. Airflow patterns are created by one or more fans either forcing or drawing air. Choose the shortest possible path between the air inlet and exit to minimize the travel length of air heated by the drive and other heat sources within the environment (rack, cabinet or drawer). Airflow velocity of approximately .6 meters /sec. (150 linear feet /min. for a 10,000 RPM drive) over the HDA is recommended...."

The operating temperature range for most ATA drives is 5 to 55 degrees C. A normal PC case should provide adequate cooling, however, if your enclosure is unable to maintain this range, we suggest that you contact your system manufacturer for information on cooling and ventilation hardware that is compatible with your specific configuration"
