Carmack over next-gen kaarten en Doom III

Ik wilde eerst even een leuke quote pakken en daarna mijn statement neerzetten en dan mag de discussie losbarsten

NVidia has been stellar in terms of driver quality and support and doing all of the things right, says Carmack, who has been an outspoken evangelist for NVidias GeForce technology. For the past few years, they have been able to consistently outplay ATI on every front. The problem is that they are about one-half step out of synch with the hardware generation because they did Xbox instead of focusing everything on their next board. So they are a little bit behind ATI.
I told everyone that I was going to demonstrate Doom III on the best hardware, and there has been no collusion or kickbacks or anything like that going on. Our objective is the technical merit.
The new ATI card was clearly superior. I dont want to ding NVidia for anything because NVidia has done everything they possibly could; but in every test we ran, ATI was faster.

Wat duidelijk is dat Carmack het heeft over een nieuwe ATI kaart die er op dit moment op de markt is. Het zou de R250 kunnen zijn maar dat lijkt me onlogisch want ik denk niet dat een opgefokte 8500 in staat is de ti4600 helemaal weg te blazen. De R300 zou dan de enige optie zijn die over blijft.

Wat onduidelijk is of Carmack al een NV30 getest heeft in combinatie met DoomIII. Beiden kaarten ( NV30 aka Nvidia Oman en R300 van ATI ) komen ongeveer tegelijkertijd op de markt.

Je zou hieruit kunnen afleiden dat Nvidia een achterstand heeft omdat ze zich de laatste tijd meer op de Xbox hebben gericht dan op het PC-front. Of dit dus ook slaat op de NV30 is dus maar de vraag.

Wat is jullie mening over dit ?

Typedef: In many respects, I really hope that John Carmack was talking about
NV30. Why? Simple. Because, it would force NVIDIA to _really_ burn some
serious hours in the lab between now and August/September in order to
recapture the performance crown. In a nutshell, all it does is better the
community.

Chalnoth: I think the main reason so many people are loving to discuss this
is that JC has actually talked about the next-gen hardware that we mere
mortals have to wait for.

Gamespot has put together a little issue on the matter of Doom III on the Xbox. Apparently Todd Hollenshead has said: "We will put more thought into the console side once we're done with the PC version, but Xbox looks the most attractive at this point."

Whether or not Doom III will also launch for Xbox is yet unknown, but as it looks right now I have my doubts. The Xbox is not nearly powerful enough to run Doom III at a near decent framerate. Maybe they will downgrade the graphics for the Xbox though. On top of this there's the problem that Doom III is being written for OpenGL and not DirectX, which is being used by the Xbox - but we've already seen that solved with other ports of id games.

If id should decide to port Doom III for the Xbox or any other console one thing is clear though: The console-world will have to wait. The game will ship first to PC users ; the way it is used and supposed to be

JC wilde Doom3 draaien op de meest geavanceerde hardware die voorhande was op de E3. Dat was dus zowiezo een r300 (anders hattie wel een een matrox gekozen).
Ik denk dat het ook een momentopname is. Mischien dat nvidia weer eerste is in de hierop volgende generatie kaarten

Ook al verteld JC alles wat in hem opkomt, hij zal echt nooit de strategien van marketing mensjes van ati of nvidia in de weg gaan zitten. Mischien magtie gewoon niet te veel zeggen over de omen en is afgesproken om de presentatie van de final van D3 exclusief op een omen te doen.

Verder heb ik ergens gelezen dat het spel er net zo mooi uitzag als ... 2(weet even niet meer welke) spel op de Nintendo Gamecube!! Ziet het er daar zo mooi uit dan?

Misschien nog wel het belangrijkste punt, de drivers van Ati zijn bij de release altijd onder de maat geweest.
Dat Carmack nu een next-gen Ati gebruikt zegt in iedergeval dat de drivers nu al goed presteren.
