http://www.promise.com/company/press_news_detail_eng.asp?press_id=36Milpitas, CA -- April 30, 2002 -- Promise Technology® announced today that its current product line of ATA and ATA RAID host adapters and subsystems provide built-in 48-bit Large LBA support to automatically recognize drive capacities greater than 137GB.
In addition, the company said it would supply free BIOS upgrades for most of its older ATA host adapters and ATA RAID cards to satisfy the new drive standard. The Promise BIOS automatically recognizes drive type and capacities for the majority of the world's ATA hard drives.
"As the leader in ATA host adapters and ATA RAID cards, Promise wants to ensure that its customers have the latest in ATA technology," said Sam Sirisena, vice president of sales and marketing worldwide. "Providing a clear upgrade path assures our users that they'll be able to support the largest drives available today."
The Large LBA specification for drive capacity (also known as 48-bit LBA) allows manufacturers to create ATA drives up to 144PB (petabytes) -- roughly 120,000 times larger than the current 137GB capacity. The new drives implement 48-bit addressing versus 28-bit addressing used in today's under-137GB Ultra ATA drives.
Without 48-bit address support, such as that provided by the Promise BIOS, drive capacity will be limited to 137GB per drive.
"By rapidly implementing support for 137GB+ drives throughout virtually our entire product line we can support larger ATA drive capacities for years to come," Sirisena said. "We want resellers, OEMs, distributors, and end-users to continue to count on Promise to provide leadership when it comes to working with new ATA drives, drive capacities, and drive standards."
48-bit LBA is now supported by the Ultra TX series, FastTrak100, FastTrak100 TX2, FastTrak100 LP, SuperTrak100, SuperTrak SX6000, UltraTrak series, and ConnectStor II. Owners of these products who do not have the 48-bit LBA BIOS can download the upgrade for free from www.promise.com.
