The General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) was developed to connect programmable instruments to digital controllers. Because of its high transfer rates of more than 1 Mbytes/s, this interface bus maintains its popularity. In 1975, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) published the ANSI/IEEE Standard 488-1975, which contains the electrical, mechanical, and functional specifications for the GPIB. This standard evolved into the ANSI/IEEE 488.1-1987. With the IEEE 488 standard, different manufacturers can design products that reliably communicate with each other.
