For months on end speculation on console price cuts and price wars have been on the minds of analysts. According to Reuters, in a research note, Gerard Klauer Mattison analyst Edward Williams reiterated comments made by other analysts in the past by stating he believes that price cuts will be announced at E3 due to the fact that retailers are worried about low sales in summer, the industrys weakest selling season.
Williams stated that a price drop for Xbox will most likely be announced at a news conference scheduled to take place on May 20th. At the conference, he estimates the price of Xbox will fall from $299 to $199 with Sony following with a $199 price drop. Williams based his estimates on end of year Xbox sales, which were estimated to be around 300,000-400,000 units. Furthermore, Williams stated that a GameCube price cut from $199 to $149 is likely to happen this fall.
"Given a need to increase its installed base and a lack of exclusive key titles to help do so, we expect Microsoft could use this opportunity to pre-empt Sony and take a leadership position in dropping the price of Xbox," he said. "However, the recent slowdown in hardware unit momentum, coupled with the competitive threat of Xbox at a lower price, makes a price cut on the PS2 more likely, in our view."
Willams continued to comment on PlayStation and PSOne by saying that due to market share, demand and lower sales in other areas of business that Sony might not even drop the price of PlayStation 2. However, he did say that he expects PSOne to drop from $99 to $79 later this year.
