-Just wanted to pass along some notes about our new drivers. I know there
are questions about what we have done so let me give you guys a little
info about our drivers.
Here is an overview of what we have done:
We have added some new options to the 3dfx Tools (AGP Command FIFO,
Depth Precision 16/32bpp, AA Demo Key and Geometry Assist), performance
optimizations related to some of the new features in the Tools, Windows
ME WHQL driver, V4/5 unified support, and some bug fixes.
The most pressing issues is that this driver is all about performance.
We included some "Geometry Assist" (GA) coding for increased pathways
for KNI and 3DNow! support. Both the hardware and driver are responsible
for the increased speed found in our Geometry Assist.
The AGP Command FIFO allows one to switch between different AGP modes.
Depth Precision 16/32bpp is a performance optimization in OpenGL. These
options are not a 32bpp post filter, they are simply a technique to
offer greater performance. You may change the option for each color
depth you are running your application in. As with any performance
enhancement, you may trade image quality for performance.
Our AA Hotkey is a feature that we expect to be one of the most popular
features included in this release. It is simply a tool to show AA on and
off for comparative purposes (must have AA enabled in the control
panel). There is no performance gain associated with toggling AA on and
off.
We have also WHQL'd these drivers including support for Windows
Millennium (WinME). These are not "leaked" or beta. We feel that driver
stability is very important and strive to ensure that any driver
released by 3dfx is certified, stable and compatible.
I think you will find that these drivers further our messaging about
speed and performance being very important to 3dfx and users of our
hardware. While we spend a great deal of time talking about image
quality, we know that without proper balance of speed and imagery,
greatness cannot be achieved. As always, this is only one release, we
will continue to pursue higher measures of speed and image quality in
subsequent releases.
Thanks!
