Well, OK, that happens more often, bad connection, but never before this bad. Connections timing out, connections fluctuating in speed, secure pages refusing to load. In other words, terrible.
Wednesdaymorning, no problem at all. In the afternoon ?? "I say gawddamn !!" problems were back. In the evening it was soo bad I decided to leave the computer alone and read a book. (yes, you read that right!!)
Thursday was more or less a re-run of the day before. No problems in the morning, and at a given moment performance went down the drain. At this point I started to look for a cause for all this. And I found a packet loss of between 10 and 90 %. OUCH. The network stats could not shed any light on the problem.
So, what the hell was wrong here ???
What was it that changed between previous days/weeks/months of internet use and the period from last tuesday evening on ?? Well, another floormate had joined the LAN and started to use the internet too. *hmmmm*.
So, someone from 4th floor (one above me) asked me what kind of NIC I had installed.
Me: "A Realtek, why do you ask ?" (and for your info, a "realtek" is a budget NIC, costing about 10 to 20 US$.)
Flatmate: "Ah, that might be the problem. What kind of NIC is that newcomer using ?"
Me: "Erhh, a Winbond, I think it was." (and again for your info, that's another bugdet NIC.)
Flatmate: "OK, there we go. I've got a spare 3Com card, wanna give that one a try ?"
And there I went. Uninstalled the Realtek drivers, shut the 'box down, replaced the card, rebooted, got the 3Com drivers installed, configured the card and rebooted again.
Packet loss 0 % !!
... And, what is the lesson to be learned ? If you have a LAN full of budget NICs, then make sure you always use the same brand of budget cards! If you have a 3Com or Intel NIC (intel NICs are, like 3Com, also high-end cards) you can add it to the network, but never a different budget brand!... Since it totally wrecked network performance for those of us who had a budget Realtek card.
Kicking the computer with the budget Winbond NIC from the LAN solved the problems that the Realtek users were having (that one smug bastard who had a 3Com didn't have any problems. Now I'm the second smug bastard 3Com user

)
... and here ends my little Network Experience
DUS...
