Een stukje geschreven door de lead-programmer van Termite, de ontwikkelaar van New World Order. Als reactie op de kritiek op de gereleasde screenshots. Dit is geen officiele statement by the way. Gewoon een thread uit een forum dat ik gecopieerd heb.

I think it should be clear that NWO is in no way as visually impressive as it could be if;

a) we were doing a singleplayer game.
b) we were targeting GF3 / ATI 8500 only.
c) we had endless amounts of time.

Many times I can feel that it is somewhat disturbing that serious game-developers have to compete (for looks) with tech-demos ripped from nVidia / ATIs dev. sites - only running on GF3s. We would love nothing more than to push the DVA engine on the latest hardware, only, but there is something called gameplay aswell - and gameplay in a multiplayer game can only really be realised with tons of players. :) Looking at the stats over what hardware people own, well..

For a programmer like myself it is veeery tempting to crank out tech-demos that blow everything else away, especially if you run on the latest hardware only - but that temptation must be resisted to allow for a fun game that runs good on everyone's computer.

You see, the thing is that what you saw in the techmovie can run on a P3 550 with a TNT2 card! Or a Matrox G400. We don't ever run NWO at a lower resolution than 1024x768 with 32 bits color and textures but we have pretty fast machines here also.

I really hope we find the time real soon to do a techdemo running only on the GF3! Other developers should fear it.

For the NWO demo - obviously we haven't pumped in the high polycounts that you see in the Doom3 vid (since NWO is not a GF3 only demo) but we have everything such as per-pixel lighting, shadowing, bumpmapping and still very high polycounts - even on a TNT2.

Keep in mind that this baby goes all the way to the top - mod teams and map builders can choose to create maps that can only run at a good fps on a GF3 / ATI 8500, in fact we hope you guys will! I would love to see a user-made NWO-map blow the latest competitor tech-demos out of the water. ;-)

When we in the Termite Crew had a look at some of the latest shots released, we went 'damn, that's an ugly screenshot!' over and over. Those shots should not have been released as they do not look like the game plays. In fact, we have had a hard time capturing the looks of the game, as it is played, on screenshots. We've debated why that is - and come to the conclusion that NWO is really optimised, tweaked and designed to look maximum good while playing. There are no 'slowmo' effects that are designed to look good in screenshots, but rather everything has been done to create an optimal gameplay feel.

What do you think?
