TCP/IP path voor pakketje

Hoe wordt nou het kortste pad berekend voor een TCP/IP pakket? Ik heb begrepen dat in het protocol een algoritme is opgenomen om dit pad te berekenen, maar hoe gebeurd dit dan? Numeriek (alles afgaan en kijken wat het beste is) lijkt mij niet echt de oplossing.
