FYI: Last mile: ethernet

Since I last wrote about Ethernet in the First Mile, the study
group has graduated to a task force and the technology has
gained an alliance to support it.

The IEEE made the study group into a task force, called
IEEE 802.3ah, in September, which basically means that it has the
go-ahead to develop a standard.

Ethernet in the First Mile refers to using Ethernet as an
access technology to homes and businesses - an area
traditionally called the "last mile." Calling it the "first
mile" is a way of putting a more positive spin on it.

The standard aims to provide a way to transmit Ethernet traffic
over existing copper phone lines at up to 10M bit/sec and up to
750 meters. With fiber optics, the goal is 1G bit/sec at 10
kilometers. The task force will also work on operations,
administration and maintenance for EFM - the stuff that
carriers would use to monitor links and find out about remote
failures, and so forth.

A standard for EFM is expected late in 2003. The alliance's

Als de wijkkastjes maximaal 1.5km uit elkaar staan lijkt het me wel haalbaar.

Indd glasvezel ligt er toch al overal op grote afstanden te overbruggen, en men beweerd dat met de gewone koper telefoon lijnen kan gebruiken ...
Maar dat zal nog wel ff duren.

Wordt wel leuk straks:
internet langs DSL,ethernet over telefoonlijn,ethernet over electriciteitsnet,kabel,... en ga zo maar door.
