It might as well have been an 8 on the Richter scale as far as it goes for SR. Weve suffered a catastrophic loss of our databases, which basically means that everything relying on our MySQL backend has been irrevocably lost. This includes, from a user perspective:
25,000+ registered readers
250,000+ messages preserved since the 9/24/98 launch of the Discussion Forums
12,000+ individual responses in the Drive Reliability Survey
Responses and Comments to dozens of reader polls
This is admittedly a huge setback, in the past viewed by us as an insurmountable failure. One need only recall the care and deliberation we put into, say, converting our original UltimateBB community to Jive: we didnt want to jettison any legacy items, and up until yesterday managed to carry every post ever made in SRs history.
Legacies also have their bad points though kludges and workarounds become commonplace. Features reserved for registered readers required users to jump through hoops to access data. As a result, this clean slate, as awful as it is, may in some respects be a blessing.
Were going to commence immediate redeployment of all our features, starting first with the discussion forums. Weve decided on phpBB, a system that will integrate better into our grand scheme of things.
You may visit and register for the forums here.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

If we do not change our direction, we will likely end up where we are heading.
