By accident I noticed on the Machinima website that Uwe Girlichs, godfather of all Quake hackers, has released a first version of his OpenDemo tool. This version consists among other tools of a special mod/vm that lets you record a demo in XML format. Using the same mod you can replay this XML demo. What's so special about this is the fact that the demo can be edited very easily - by XML editors but also by any text-editor like notepad.
Just to see how all this works I decided to do a quick experiment: I launched Q3A with the opendemo mod and recorded a short demo of a rocketjump. I then edited the demofile and increased the height of the jump by changing several XML-records. You can see the result in this avi.
Having to use a separate mod to record let alone replay demos isn't very appealing so I hope the opendemo code will eventually be included in OSP and other mods. A more difficult task would be to write a user friendly tool like KeyGrip to work with the XML demo file: change camera positions, add sounds etc etc.
