jumper settings can be found here....

Compaq has not tested any larger processors in your model of computer. In theory, you should be able to swap out the current (socket 7) processor and install a different Pentium processor. You should then be able to get it working with little to no problem as long as the jumper settings on the system board match the new processor. (From customer reports, an Intel Pentium 166 or Intel Pentium 200 works fine in the computer.) Compaq does not have any information about any other brand of processors, any kind of performance improvement data, or a price.
It's very possible that when you do update the processor, the ROM will not recognize the correct speed. This is not a problem, this is not a critical issue, and unfortunately this is not fixable. The ROM just does not recognize the newer chip. This is no big deal though, as long as the jumpers on the system board are set correctly for the new processor.
The Intel MMX chip will not work in your model of Presario. There are too many technological differences between the chip and the motherboard in your computer. Compaq does not have any kind of motherboard upgrades available to make it work. Only select models of Presarios released after Jan 1rst 1997 have the MMX processor. Compaq does not have any kind of exchange program for customers to switch their unit with a newer model.
The MMX Overdrive chip has been tested by Compaq on the 5500 and 9500 series and is confirmed to NOT work, although this does not mean that it will not work on your computer. (This is what customers have been reporting as working....

Your results may vary.) It has been tested on the 9600 series computer by Compaq and does seem to work satisfactory. This does not mean that Compaq can guarantee that it will work in your computer.

The Pentium II will not work on any currently available computer. The reason for this is related to the new style construction used in this chip. The chip will not fit in a socket seven or Pentium Pro socket. It is made a whole new way, it is on an upright board that resembles a ram chip board or small add-on card, also the secondary cache is on the same board as the Pentium II chip. As a result a completely different motherboard will be required to use this chip except that a third party motherboard will not work in this computer.
