Msgsrv32.exe is a program (Windows 32-bit Message Server) that performs several background functions, including the following:
* Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown.
* Run the shell program (usually Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond.
* Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system.
* Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files.
* Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled.
* Play the system startup and shutdown sounds.
Some Common Errors and fixes are below
Msgsrv32 Errors with a Sound Blaster Card:
Windows may boot up just fine but any time you go to use a program or component which uses audio causes General Protection Faults (GPFs).
This may occur from loading the drivers from the CD after windows has already detected the card and installed drivers, loading them from the CD when this occurs causes the installation program to replace some of the files with Windows 3.1 files, causing incompatibility and GPFs. Remove the Sound Blaster card from the device manager and then use the Add New Hardware Wizard and use the drivers supplied by Creative Labs. You may also have to edit your SYSTEM.INI FILE and remove references to SB16AUX,DRV, SB16AUD,DRV AND SBAWE32,DRV.
Msgsrv32 Errors with Screen Savers:
Some programs respond poorly to power management commands especially Screen Savers, try didable Power Management if the computer hangs with Msgrsv32 errors after sitting for a while.
Msgsrv32 Errors "caused a page fault in Kernel32.dll":
This can happen if you have a damaged password list, find all instances of "*.pwl" and delete them all. If you have Windows 95, download and install the Password Update, Windows 98 users do not need this fix
General Protection Fault or Invalid Page Fault During Setup:
In Windows 98, when installing from a folder on the hard drive instead of the CD, you may get an Msgsrv32 or kernel error, Microsoft has a fix for this.
