How to make your Nokia cellular phone "communicate" with notebook under Windows 98 via infrared interface.
A couple of preface words.
If you are the happy owner of a notebook and cellular phone with infrared ports ( IrDA port), you can fully enjoy their communication possibilities. However, to adjust infrared link in this case is not a simple task, especially, if your notebook running Windows 98, as an operating system. Even a well prepared user can come across several unexpected problems, as it accured with us.
The "Nokia Cellular Data Suite" (NCDS) program, intended for Infrared interaction of the telephone and notebook, for some secret reason is not compatible with Windows 98, but only only with Windows 95. You need to do some tricks to adjust the 98 system to operate correctly with this program.
The matter is, that between Windows 95 and Windows 98 exists small discrepancy, when the it comes about infrared interaction. Windows 98 supports new IrDA communication subsystem, which, unfortunately, precludes NCDS to operate correctly. However there is a rather simple method to make Windows 98 to "forget" about this subsystem and to use another, similar to one, Windows 95 using.
Warning! Though all operations are rather simple and safe, nevertheless remember, that you edit the system files, so be cautious!
So, lets start...
First of all the "Nokia Cellular Data Suite" program is necessary. It''s not really a problem to get it whether you have money or not. If the second occured to you, just have a little patience to search for it over the WEB.
WHAT TO DO
Before you start to "correct" WINDOWS 98 it is necessary to make several changes with your notebook BIOS. You need to activate the second serial port (Enable COM2). Pay attention it should be activated, instead of leaving default option "auto".
So, if you already have NCDS distribution kit, we begin to take following steps:
1. Click by the mouse''s right key icon "Infrared Monitor" (it''s to be in a lower right corner of your desktop - in a "systray") and select "disable IR Monitor" (This, as you probably guesed, would Disable Infrared Monitor) :-).
2. Now open "control panel" - "system" - "device" - "network devices" and delete "IrDA port" (or it could be IrDA device or something). Now Windows would ask you to reboot the comuter - answer NO.
3. Now open "control panel" - "system" - "device" - "COM and LPT ports". Delete "Ir parallel port " and "Ir serial port ". After that operation, just usual COM1 and LPT1 ports should left.
4. Now open a folder ''C:\WINDOWS\INF'' (pay attantion - it is hidden). Rename files ''tos4mo.inf'' and ''tos4mu.inf'' to something like '' tos4mu _ inf '' and '' tos4mo _ inf ''.
5. In the same directory (folder) ''C:\WINDOWS\INF'' open for editing the ''msports.inf'' file. Search for string (line) number 52 (there is an expression like ''PNP0510'' in it''s beginning). In the beginning of this line you will see ";" (semicolon), remove it. Do the same with lines 53 (''PNP0511''), 305 ('' PNP0510 ''), 306 ('' PNP0511 ''). Save the edited files and reboot.
6. While Windows 98 loading, it should detect the following devices: " the IR serial port ", " the IR parallel port " and "Generic Ir Serial Port". When "Generic Ir Serial Port" will be detected, you''ll request for location of drivers for this "Generic Ir Serial Port". Do not select "Floppy disk drives" and "Specify a location", click "next". Now WIN98 will declare that the refreshed driver for ''Generic Ir Serial Port'' was detected. Then system would copy all the necessary files from the WINDOWS 98 distributive Kit. After it done click "Done" :-)).
7. Now take a look: "control panel" - "system" - "devices" - " ports COM and LPT ". Yep, "Generic Ir Serial Port (COM2)" is installed! Double click it and select "resources". < br >
My configuration was:
Input/output Range: 02F8-02FF
Interrupt Request: 03
Input/Output Range: 0300-030F
Direct Memory Access: 05
My Port configuration:
Bits per second: 921600
Data bits: 8
Paruty: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: Hardware
If you default configuration differs from mine, I''d recommend to change it (for any reasons, this way it works). If you have updated configuration reboot.
8. Now install Nokia Cellular Data Suite (i hope you haven''t done it yet ;-)). While it installing, the installation program (wizard) will attempt to find COM - port, which the telephone is attached to, but WILL NOT DETECT it. There''s no trouble, don''t worry. Select COM2 and continue installation. After copying files the setup program installs the driver and executes some tests. Do not pay attention to the message "Phone not connected" and after installation completed reboot the computer.
9. After reboot open the "Start" menu and select "RUN" command. In the command line write "regedit" and click ÎÊ.
The following should be edited:
[ HKEY _ LOCAL _ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Nokia\DTP2V3]
"UseIr" = hex:00
"UserPortIR" = " "
To change this to:
[ HKEY _ LOCAL _ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Nokia\DTP2V3]
"UseIr" = hex:01
"UserPortIR" = "COM2"
10. So, finally you can start Nokia Cellular Data Suite. However before you start it, don''t forget to activate the infrared function on your telephone.
