Casema to deploy enhanced cable modem system from Lucent Technologies that doubles existing capacity
FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 29, 2000
LOS ANGELES - (Western Cable Show, booth #3801) Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that Casema, the second largest cable operator in the Netherlands, will deploy an enhanced version of its CableConnect(SM) cable modem (CM) system. The new version will deliver service to twice as many users and will support both existing proprietary and new standards-based cable modems.
The CableConnect CM 2020 system is an enhancement of the DEMOS-1 products Lucent obtained earlier this year in its acquisition of DeltaKabel Telecom cv, of Gouda, the Netherlands, a leading provider of proprietary and standards-based cable modem and Internet (IP) telephony solutions in Europe.
Using a distributed architecture, the enhanced version includes the CableConnect CMTS (cable modem termination system) and other components in the cable operator''s headend as well as new local communications controller located in a node in the cable network between the headend and the customer. Casema and other cable operators currently using the DEMOS-1 system can upgrade to the new system without interrupting service to current customers or needing extra space in their network.
"Our flat-rate cable modem service was so much of a success that we needed more capacity in a very short time," said Henk de Goede, president and CEO, Casema. "Lucent''s enhanced system will double the number of customers we can serve and introduce a two-tiered offering, basic Internet access using the existing proprietary cable modems and high speed broadband connections using new standards-based cable modems."
"The original DEMOS-1 system was designed as a cost-effective solution to provide data service over smaller cable networks," said Andre du Croix, general manager of Lucent''s InterNetworking Systems'' Broadband Fiber/HFC Access Group in Gouda, Netherlands. "This enhanced version will enable cable operators to generate more revenue by serving twice as many customers a smooth migration path to broadband, standards-based cable modem systems."
The enhanced CableConnect cable modem system will be available in the second quarter of 2001 and is targeted to cable operators with networks serving from 5,000 to 100,000 subscribers.
Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., USA, designs and delivers the systems, software, silicon and services for next-generation communications networks for service providers and enterprises. Backed by the research and development of Bell Labs, Lucent focuses on high-growth areas such as broadband and mobile Internet infrastructure; communications software; communications semiconductors and optoelectronics; Web-based enterprise solutions that link private and public networks; and professional network design and consulting services.
