A hacked client was created and distributed. It was fairly unknown until a user in the Ars Technica SETI forum recently made a confession that he had used the hack to inflate his stats into the millions and propel his team up in the rankings. Team Ars Technica is a well respected technical site which has a SETI team that is number 1 among all non-corporate SETI clubs.

All known offenders have been removed. The users of this hacked client were on various teams, not just ARS.

The problem is that the hack still works and people are still using it. This has seriously tainted the entire SETI@home project as a whole. In fact, it has been reported that these script kiddies have been uploading hacked units to teams they dislike to taint their image.

The people at SETI are now aware of this problem. The end result will most likely be a new client that takes longer to search but does not allow for cheating. There has been no word yet on any progress regarding developments in this matter.

Originally we patched the 1.06 client to see if it was at all possible to reduce processing time to a absolute minimum and we succeded without much effort. Since the 1.06 client does not contain any kind of integrity checks, it is really easy for anyone to compromise the SETI client.
After S.A.R. and Antimoses joined TLC, we were contacted by another high-profile TLC cruncher with whom we joined up with.
This member then proceeded to patch the new 3.03 client which was harder to patch due to the numerous integrity checks the 3.03 sports.
However, in the long run this is getting boring and we have more or less proved to ourselves what we wanted to prove.
