Alternative to Odido Zyxel

Hi!

I have Odido for a while and I have been using their router ZYXEL T-54, but I always had issues with it (My setup is full wireless; no ethernet cables around). I notice this mainly in the form of lag spikes while gaming:

• I play online games (e.g. Call of Duty, Insurgence Sandstorm, etc) which I noticed lag-spikes intermittently, causing stutters and other weird things such as the sound dissaperaring and coming back after 1-2 seconds
• I built a local gaming streaming from my Desktop to my TV using Apollo + Moonlight, and the local network simply can't handle it. As soon as one extra device connects to it and starts to use the network (e.g. watch a Youtube in 4K) , the whole gaming experience degrades with jitters and slow connection warnings;

The issues above both confirmed that the router was the bottleneck. When using the cable directly into it, the issues were gone. The router is located in the hallway in the middle of my apartment; the wifi signal is strong in all devices that are using it.

So I ended up upgrading from Zyxel T-54 to Fritzbox 5090 Pro , which seemed like a great improvement. I noticed that I could do my gaming streaming with multiple devices connected and using the network without any issues, which is a great improvement, but one problem still there: I am still having jitters/lag-spikes constantly every 10 minutes, which ends up degrading both the multiplayer and localhost experience. (Btw, I am investigating this on here in case anyone is interested to look at).

So, while waiting for the answer from Frtizbox support and Reddit folks, I am also looking for possible router alternatives to Fritzbox which I can use to fix my setup.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other routes? or perhaps any suggestions in how can I fix this problem?

Ik vermoed dat het issue eerder te wijten is aan de verschillende wifi signalen van jou en die van je buren die op elkaar interfereren. Dat past precies op de verstoringen die je nu ervaart met gamen en streamen.

Dé oplossing: kabels gebruiken voor gaming en streaming.

I get it, cable solves the problem, but it is too much of hassle for me to pull it around the whole apartment unfortunately.

It is hard to believe the neighbors Wifi is causing this too. This is a periodic latency spike that happens every 10 minutes, it is not a spike that happens randomly, and its interval is very specific: every 10 minutes, on a specific timestamp interval such as 18h:17m:40s, 18h:27m:40s , and so on. I can also see that I am the only one using 5 GHz channel 36. So it feels like neighbor signals it not the issue here..

Check the logs of the Fritzbox to see if it's killing the 5Ghz due to DFS interference. Should not happen, since 36 is not a DFS channel, but you never know.

@Illusion I thought about that too.. I checked it, but there are no messages about switching channels

Interesting to mention that I turned on the Zyxel from Odido and set 5 GHz network, channel 36, 80 MHz (same setup as the Fritzbox), and let it run for half hour. There was no latency spikes.. So I am assuming that neighbor signal is not the issue here.

Any thoughts on which other routers I could use instead of the Frtizbox?

Elke router die om kan gaan met VLAN’s voldoet. Als je meer speciale instelmogelijkheden wil om te kunnen tweaken is de UDR7 van Ubiquiti een optie. Kost wat maar dan heb je ook wat.

Anders heb je nog Asus waar je indien nodig Merlin firmware op kunt gebruiken, Mikrotik heeft ook e.e.a. maar is niet geschikt voor beginners en zo zijn er meer merken en types te koop.
