Tualatin-S
First of all, if you would like to see my review of the desktop version of this processor, click here. I want to point out that the desktop and server version of the Tualatin are very much alike except for a few notable features.
The first of those is the fact that Tualatin-S will run at 1.13Ghz or 1.26Ghz originally, whereas the desktop version will run at 1.2Ghz. Besides being a way to tell them apart, that means very little since the clock speed difference is only 130Mhz between the lowest and highest chip.
The next, and probably most important feature of the Tualatin-S version only, is the addition of an extra 256kb of L2 cache running at the full frequency of the processors core. That means the processor now has 512kb of L2 cache on the die. Intel has been able to do this because the other notable feature of the Tualatin is that it has gone through a die shrink from 0.18 microns to 0.13 microns. This created extra room on the core which Intel decided to use for more cache.
What's important about this cache is that it will allow the Tualatin-S to get more data to sit resident in the cache, which is extremely important for a processor like the Tualatin, which still features the 'slow' 133Mhz front side bus of the previous Pentium III's.
This cache, which has an extremely high bandwidth because of Intels wide date path to it and its low latency, should help the Tualatin in a variety of applications, but most importantly it should speed them up in applications which are commonly used on workstation or server class systems.
