Het lukt me in de nieuwste Linux Mint niet om 4K@60Hz te krijgen op mijn nieuwe Samsung tv.

Ik heb onlangs een htpc'tje gebouwd om aan mijn nieuwe Samsung 4K-tv (UE65CU7170) te hangen. De specs zijn: AMD 3200G met Vega 8 graphics; Gigabyte A520I AC moederbord (ITX); 16 GB DDR4@3200; en twee SATA SSD bootschijfjes, die ik nog had liggen. Dit maakt makkelijk multibooten mogelijk via het BIOS. Windows 10 staat op één van de twee schijven, maar de bedoeling is om 99 procent van de tijd Linux te gebruiken. Ik gebruik de nieuwste stabiele Linux Mint, 21.3 uit mijn hoofd. Dit gaat op bijna alle punten voortreffelijk.

Terzijde: vanuit het BIOS heb ik 2 GB geheugen toegekend als videogeheugen; liever zou ik 4 GB toekennen, maar deze grootte staat niet in de lijst.

Deze PC is onder Windows 10 in staat om 4K@60Hz uit te sturen naar mijn Samsung 4K-tv uit 2023. Maar onder Linux Mint krijg ik de mogelijkheden 24, 25 en 30 Hz. 50 of 60 Hz worden niet aangegeven, terwijl de tv dit wel aankan (getuige de specs van de tv en de ervaring in Windows). Als ik de PC aan mijn recente 4K-bureaumonitor hang, kan ik in Linux Mint wél 60 Hz krijgen.

Ik heb geprobeerd: a) 4 verschillende HDMI-kabels, waarvan 2 dure; b) de DisplayPort-uitgang op het moederbord, met een verloopje naar HDMI; c) het updaten van de drivers via het OS; d) het downloaden van de nieuwste drivers voor Ubuntu van AMD's website (gisteren); e) opstarten vanaf een stick in Ubuntu en Manjaro (KDE). Het effect is steeds hetzelfde: ik kan niet hoger dan 30 Hz komen om naar de tv te sturen.

Niet van deze wereld

Je kan het ook andersom doen, niet jouw PC aanpassen aan de 4:2:0 van de TV, maar de TV zodanig aanpassen dat ie ook 4:4:4 gewoon accepteert.
Bij jouw monitor moet je HDMI UHD Color op "On" zetten.

Je kan manueel modi toevoegen voor schermen, al is xrandr vrij archaïsch om te gebruiken.

In de Systeeminstellingen verschijnt vervolgens de 59.98 Hz-optie keurig, maar als ik deze selecteer gebeurt er eigenlijk niks. Ik krijg de vraag of het er goed uitziet, en als ik ja zeg, zie ik dat het weer op 30 Hz staat.

Dit moederbord heeft sowieso een compatability issue met de AMD 3200G
Dat staat met koeienletters op de website van Gigabyte

hoewel het lijkt alsof dat wel met bios F10 is solved

maar de AMD drivers op linux zijn altijd fucked up geweest voor ryzen
HDMI 2.1 op linux?

is dat niet dit verhaaltje?

Dank je wel @MartinMeijerink -- gedaan, en dan wordt even het scherm zwart, om vervolgens weer terug te komen (met de schaling van 200% terug naar 100% en klaarblijkelijk terug op 30 hz), en dan staat er in de terminal:

@boyette, dank voor je uitgebreide reactie en het meedenken. Ik heb intussen Mesa gedownload en gereboot. Het maakt geen verschil.
Ik heb BIOS F17.
En die link is interessant, maar aan mijn Acer 4K-desktopmonitor geeft dezelfde PC onder Linux Mint wél 4K@60hz uit, dus dat lijkt dan ook niet het probleem te zijn... Of wacht. Misschien heb ik die via DisplayPort aangesloten. Ik check het nog even via HDMI.

Update: ook via HDMI krijg ik op mijn 28" 4K-monitor moeiteloos 60 hz. Wat nu? @7zp @boyette @MartinMeijerink -- hebben jullie nog ideeën?

Ik zie dat je tv alleen HDMI 2.0 poorten heeft (ik kan dat niet op de site van Samsung vinden maar meerdere webshops hebben het alleen over HDMI 2.0). Hierdoor is de HDMI bandbreedte een stuk lager dan die van je monitor (die denk ik wel HDMI 2.1 heeft).

HDMI 2.0 zou wel 4k 60 Hz aan moeten kunnen (zie deze tabel en de tabel eronder), maar dan moet je wel HDR uitzetten, of 4:2:0 subsampling gebruiken. Ik denk dat Windows dit zelf al goed instelt, maar dat de Linux drivers dit nog niet automatisch goed kunnen doen. Kun je kijken of je HDR uit kunt zetten?

dat signaal is vrij zwak op zon moederbord en zon tv kan vrij kritisch zijn

hoewel dit niet echt verklaard waarom het met Windows wel lukt..

technically, I'm not pedantic.

Hier loop ik op mijn PC / laptop ook tegenaan. De reden dat het met 30hz wel lukt en met 60hz niet heeft blijkbaar te maken met het feit dat je over de bandbreedte limiet van HDMI heen gaat. Je hebt DP geprobeerd maar uiteindelijk weer naar HDMI gerouteerd met een plug en HDMI kan simpelweg niet de bandbreedte kwijt voor die resolutie met die verversing. Dat is in ieder geval de reden dat ik er met mijn docking station tegenaan loop, wellicht ook de jouwe.

Dank je, @dirkus7 -- dat van die settings (HDR, 4:2:0) snijdt denk ik wel hout, maar dan is het vreemd dat het aan de Acer 4K-bureaumonitor wel lukt... Dat gezegd hebbend, ga ik op zoek of ik die settings kan vinden!

Dank @boyette -- ik heb niet dezelfde HDMI-kabel gebruikt als met de monitor (te kort, niet handig), maar wel 4 andere, waarvan 2 duur/sjiek.

Dank @HTT-Thalan -- heb je een idee hoe ik me aan dat gebrek aan bandbreedte kan ontworstelen?

zou je het met dezelfde kabel willen testen
de lengte hier kan al heel snel een verschil maken

op zon moederbord maakt iedere centimeter kabel op zulke resolutie en frequentie al verschil

Ik heb de EDID-data van je schermen door edid-decode gehaald en daar staat precies welke formaten ondersteund worden. Je ziet bij de TV dat 3840x2160 op 60Hz (en ook 50Hz) wel mogelijk is, maar dan alleen met een YCbCr 4:2:0 signaal.

Je kan het ook andersom doen, niet jouw PC aanpassen aan de 4:2:0 van de TV, maar de TV zodanig aanpassen dat ie ook 4:4:4 gewoon accepteert.
Bij jouw monitor moet je HDMI UHD Color op "On" zetten.

Het is me gelukt. Dank je wel voor de tip, @MartinMeijerink! De handleiding van mijn specifieke tv, de UE65CU7170, leert dat de optie niet 'UHD Color' heet, maar 'Input Signal Plus'/'Invoersignaal extra'.

De instelling kan gewijzigd worden onder
Menu > Settings > All Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Input Signal Plus

Waar ik nu nog mee kamp is dat de verbinding één keer in de 2 tot 5 minuten even wegvalt, voor 1 à 2 seconden. Dit gebeurt bij de verversingsfrequenties 60 en 59,94 hz; ik zit dit nu te typen met de verbinding op 50 hz en ik heb het beeld nog niet op zwart zien gaan. Ik ga 60 en 59,94 hz nog uitproberen met de andere HDMI-kabels die ik heb.

Ik heb geen idee waarom de modus UHD Color/Input Signal Plus niet standaard is ingeschakeld.

Ik wil toch nog even iets toevoegen. Het maakt veel uit welke HDMI-kabel ik gebruik. De Ugreen "8K"-kabel die ik gebruik geeft de minst teleurstellende resultaten bij de verbinding van de HTPC (3200G/A520I-AC) naar de tv (Samsung UE65CU7170) bij 4K@60hz@4:4:4. Ik wilde eigenlijk de 10 meter kabel gaan gebruiken die me in de versie van 2 meter al heel goed bevallen was voor mijn (MacBook M1 naar) desktopmonitor en die een hoogwaardige indruk maakt. In de 10 meter-versie geeft deze meer haperingen tussen de HTPC en de tv. Met mijn 7,5 meter-kabel van de Action valt het beeld zelfs het grootste deel van de tijd helemaal weg.

Maar zelfs met de Ugreen-kabel op 4K@60hz@4:4:4 heb ik elke paar minuten wel een paar seconden 'zwart'. Op 59,94 hz net zo. Alleen bij 50 hz lijkt het beeld nooit weg te vallen, maar in deze modus lijkt de kleurweergave te veranderen.

Zit hem dat dan in de kwaliteit van deze kabels? En: wat is "kwaliteit" eigenlijk bij HDMI-kabels? Hoe dan ook maakt het dus verschil.

Wat geen verschil maakt is het het switchen naar Windows op deze hardware: onder Windows geeft de combinatie van HTPC en tv op 4K@60hz@4:4:4 óók veel uitvallers.

Dan sluit ik mijn MacBook 13" M1 (16GB RAM) aan –uiteraard met Apple's Thunderbolt naar HDMI-adapter van 80 euro (ik verdiep me niet voor niets in alternatieven voor Apple)–, en dan heb ik gelijk beeld. Valt nul keer weg. Geen haperingen (dropped frames) bij 4K-video's afspelen op YouTube. Oké: de dropped frames bij hoge-resolutie video's zijn met het plaatsen van een krachtiger processor, zoals een 5700G, waarschijnlijk wel op te lossen (de 3200G trekt 4K@60hz op YouTube gewoon niet). Zijn met een 5700G ook de momentjes 'zwart' weg? Dat betwijfel ik sterk. Heb ik tegen die tijd meer dan 500 euro uitgegeven aan een machientje waarvan de bedoeling was dat het leuk en goedkoop was? Ook. Een Mac Mini M2 kost zo'n €660 en daar had ik zeker minder gedoe mee gehad. Het extra geld had ik er achteraf gezien wel voor over gehad.

(De Ugreen-kabel van 3 meter en de ogenschijnlijk goed gemaakte kabel van 10 meter werken met de MacBook allebei goed in 4K@60hz. Of de Mac op 10-bits/4:4:4 bezig is, daar kom ik niet achter.)

Na ja. Ik heb nu wel een machine om mee te werken in de x86-wereld, voor die momenten dat ik dat nodig heb.

Ik vind dit een vrij teleurstellende ervaring. Ik ga zeker niet Linux hier de schuld van geven, het probleem lijkt toch vooral hardware. Ik heb een tv aangeschaft die misschien te goedkoop/eenvoudig is (zo'n €700 voor een 65"-model), in combinatie met niet de juiste HTPC. Misschien had ik een andere ervaring gehad als ik de HTPC met Intel was gaan bouwen, omdat de combinatie met mijn specifieke tv dan mogelijkerwijs gunstiger is.

Helaas laten de aankoopbeslissingen zich niet terugdraaien. Ik ga niet voor honderden euro's nu een HTPC op basis van Intel bouwen, met niet meer dan de hoop dat dat beter zal gaan. Ik kies liever voor iets waarvan ik al weet dat het gaat werken. Ik ga dan ook even sparen voor een Mac Mini M2 en deze als HTPC gebruiken.

Moet de kabel zo lang zijn? Daar lijkt vooral je probleem te zitten.
Zijn er (elektrisch) storende factoren waar de kabel langs loopt?
Staat er druk op de connectoren (aan de TV- of de HTPC-zijde)? Dat kan de elektrische verbinding bemoeilijken. Heb je al een andere HDMI-aansluiting geprobeerd?
