compaq presario HDD probleempje

een huisgenoot heeft een compaq presario 7210
P120 32MB 850MB HDD
nou heeft hij een 10.2 gig maxtor hdd gekocht, alleen de bios herkent maar tot 8.4 gig de maxtor software (maxblast) loopt vast op die bak.. op de oude hdd zit ook nog een management partitie (4MB) met software om de bios aan te sturen.. deze krijgen we ook niet overgezet.. wie heeft voor mij de oplossing om het schijfje aan de praat te krijgen??

ff nieuwe bios ophalen bij compaq...
als je geluk hebt is er een bios voor hdu's groter dan 8,4 GB en anders is het pech hebben

Zoek de website van je fabrikant van je moederbord, en kijk of je een bios-update kunt downen.
Bios flashen en klaar.
_{Moest ik ook doen, bios herkende maar tot 32 GB, had ik niet bij nagedacht toen ik nieuwe hdd kocht, maar ja hij werkt nu dus prima.}

Uhm, ik ken dit probleem. Op de nieuwe maxtor HDD's zit een jumper(naast de jumpers van de Master en slave) met die jumpers kun je het aantal cylinders begrenzen tot bebaald aantal. Haal je deze jumper eraf, en dan PC aan.. Als het goed is doettie het dan

A: Operating System Partition Limitations
DOS 6.22 or LESS: DOS 6.22 or less does not support drives greater than 8.4. There are no solutions at this time.

Windows 95: Windows 95 version A (standard version) does support extended interrupt 13 so it can support drives with capacities greater than 8.4 GB. Because of the limitation of the FAT16 file system, a minimum of five partitions will need to be created on the hard drive. This is caused by the 2.048 GB partition limitation of a FAT 16 Operating System. Partition quantities will increase as the hard drive's capacity increases (e.g., an 11 GB hard drive WILL require a minimum of six partitions). Microsoft has identified that Windows 95 does NOT support drive capacities greater than 32 GB. They recommend that users either upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 4 (or newer). Reference Microsoft Article Q246818 for more information.
NOTE: Windows 95 Upgrade is NOT considered a standard version. It requires that MS-DOS or Windows 3.1x be installed. This means that a Windows Upgrade will NOT support drive capacities greater than 8.4 GB.

Windows 95B / OSR2, Windows 95C and Windows 98: Windows 95B (OSR2), Windows 95C and Windows 98 does support extended interrupt 13 which allows the operating system to support drives larger than 8.4 GB. These operating systems also support FAT 32. This file system lets the user create partitions larger than 2.048 GB. FAT 32 can only be used on hard drives whose capacity exceeds 512 megabytes. Microsoft has identified that Windows 95 does NOT support drive capacities greater than 32 GB. They recommend that users either upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 4 (or newer). Microsoft has also identified occasions when the operating system may misreport cluster sizes (and/or disk capacities) on drives whose capacities exceed 32 GB. Reference Microsoft Article Q243450 for the fix to this issue.

Windows 2000 Supports FAT 16, FAT 32 and NTFS file systems. As menioned above, FAT 16 file system supports partition sizes up to 2.048 GB. FAT 32 file system supports up to two Terabytes and, according to Microsoft, two Terabytes should be considerd the partition size limit for NTFS file systems.

Windows NT 3.5: Windows NT 3.5 does not support drives greater than 8.4 GB.

Windows NT 4.0: Windows NT 4.0 WILL support drive capacities greater than 8.4 GB provided:
NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 is used along with the ATAPI.SYS file linked to in article Q183654 on the Microsoft Website.
The system is upgraded to NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.
NOTE: Reference Microsoft Article # Q197667 "Installing Windows NT Server on a Large IDE Hard Disk " for proper installation/upgrade procedures.

OS/2 Warp 3 and 4: Some versions are limited to a boot partition size of 3.1 GB or 4.3 GB. This issue can be resolved by obtaining the latest Device Driver Pack from IBM.

8.4 GB limitation.
The maximum parameters at the 8.4 GB barrier are 16,383 cylinders, 16 heads and 63 sectors for a capacity of 8.455 GB. To go beyond this boundary, a new extended INT 13 function is needed from the BIOS as a support feature for the drives. The BIOS listed below are all "CORE" BIOS that will support drives larger than 8.4 GB. Even though a BIOS is dated correctly or is the current version, it may not be able to support extended interrupt 13 because of modification done to the "CORE" of the BIOS from the motherboard manufacturer.

okee..als iemand een biosupgrade voor een compaq presario 7210 weet te vinden istie ook onsterfelijk op GoT.. Maxblast loopt trouwens ook in de textmode vast, zonder foutmeldingen te geven.. 't schijfje is ook niet als 8 gig te formatteren, als dat alleen al werkte.. maar eigenlijk wil ik toch de volledige capaciteit. BTW het is een maxtor 10 gig 91021U2 schijf..

dat kan volgens mij niet. toevallig heb ik laatst ook zo'n oude compaq pentium gehad met een grote schijf (15GB) en dan moet je het volgende doen (laatste stap ben ik niet helemaal zeker van):

- laat de BIOS de schijf detecteren. dat wordt dan 8,4GB.
- daarna download je MaxBlast of een andere DiskManager en die installeer je (ik heb toevallig ook MaxBlast gebruikt op die Compaq PC, maar OnTrack DiskManager (o.a. bij IBM te downloaden) zou ook wel moeten werken).
- daarna is je schijf goed en kun je onder DOS/Windows gewoon de 10GB gebruiken.
(- installeer de nieuwste compaq softpaq (zo heet geloof ik die diagnostics/bios partitie) van het internet op de nieuwe schijf.)

je hoeft je schijf ook niet te partitioneren/formatteren voordat je MaxBlast gebruikt, dat doet het programma geloof ik zelf wel, in ieder geval kan het VOOR formatteren al geinstalleerd worden (volgens mij moet dat zelfs want het moet op een soort onzichtbaar apart opstartstukje/partitie.

[edit2] die speciale partitie hoef je niet te maken (voor de compaq software), als je de diskettes maar maakt en hebt (downloaden), dan kun je die gebruiken om van op te starten als je in de "BIOS Setup/Diagnostics" wilt... [/edit2]

maxblast loopt dus vast, ook in textmode... met als gevolg dat je de schijf niet kunt partitioneren.. want met een win9x bootfloppie fat 32 erop zetten doetie ook niet..

da's alleen als de bios het aantal cylinders niet goed herkent.. in dit geval zit die jumper er niet op..
