For the record, I was not affiliated in any way with that project. Nor do I even condone the actual implementation of such a system. Even though it was for academic research, I would be rather upset if I knew that my machine had been forced to waste cycles in this way without my knowledge or approval. Also for the record, I did not read anything other than the article on CNN.com and the front web page linked above. In particular, I haven't read the article they wrote, so I don't know if they actually used any web servers that they didn't have permission to do this on. Perhaps they had permission from the owners of all the servers they used. If so, congrats to them - it's an awesome idea. If not, shame on them.
