English language translation for the website

Would be nice to add an official language translation to the site for English in addition to Dutch. Using Google Translator sometimes messes with buttons and display of things so it isnt always efficient, just the main buttons and UI of tweakers website being translated is helpful, maybe even offer it as the community to fill in and offer translation to different languages?

Not speaking for Tweakers but on a personal note: I don't think there's a real usecase here. Tweakers is a dutch site, always has been, (probably) always will be. We have a negligible amount of non-dutch speakers as far as I'm aware (depends on your definition of negligible ofcourse) and making the entire site multi language (and, if you're going there, you're gonna want to make it entirely locale aware including datetime conventions, number notations etc.) is a huge undertaking. I am not familiar with the codebase but I'm quite sure large parts (if not all) of it are not built with this in mind. And after all this huge undertaking has been conquered you're left with a site with an English UI and all the content still being dutch... that's no pretty sight either, is it?

If we're purely talking about the navigation-aspect of Tweakers.net, this might be a good idea. There are plenty of foreigners (students for example) in this country who could use Tweakers as a source to search for Dutch related tech stuff, topics about (problems with) Dutch telecom providers for example.

As for the actual content, maybe someone can create a CSS-snippet that can translate the posts or create a link that automatically copies the post to Google Translate?

I don't mind using third-party extensions to translate the content of posts/things as those are usually static and just text/images.

My ideas was mainly on the navigation aspect of Tweakers.net only as @Raven mentioned, since using Google Translate on Chrome (tho not everyone uses Chrome these days, Firefox does not offer that) breaks some button functionalities on the site from my experience.

I agree with this ! Tweakers is already made for belgium too which is almost a 50/50 french and dutch country, and english is often used to understand eachother if we don't know dutch.

My 2 cents: No. Plenty is already being offered in English in the Netherlands, leaving less and less room for the Dutch language just to "service" everyone.

I'm more than glad that there are still some pure dutch forums like Tweakers.

Thanks for the suggestion, we hear this idea every once in a while but haven't really posted our reasoning (to my knowledge), so here are my thoughts:

Providing official translations for any language is a no-go purely because of the scope and scale of effort required. Such a functionality will also have knock-on effects later on in the development of the site, as each new feature will also need to factor multi-language support.

The other remaining route is to attempt and optimize the site's markup to facilitate translator extensions so that the layout doesn't break when using them. This approach also creates significant overhead during development. Simply put, supporting multiple translation extensions for multiple browsers, both on desktop and mobile, is also a herculean undertaking.

So all in all, I don't really see a viable path towards enabling such a functionality.

Lastly, on a small personal note, I myself am non-Dutch and I credit the fact I had no other option but to read Tweakers in its original state as one of the methods for developing my own language skills.

I agree. Besides that there are probably not a lot (if not none) French tech websites or forums translated to English.

As Dutch we already are adapting ourselves a lot when we are in foreign countries. Even in our own country we talk English, German and French (also business wise) to "service" people from other countries when they are here.

Therefore it would be nice if this piece of website, originally Dutch, stays 100% Dutch.

It's also mentioned in the "About Tweakers" section (translated to English as a service ):

The site is among the top 20 most visited websites on the Dutch-language internet.

As a Dutchman living abroad, when visiting the big Ranstad on trips when I am back, I frequently have to speak English as the serving staff is either a foreign student or (economic) migrant that is not (yet) fluent in Dutch. Which feels really odd to me. So a Dutch tech corner on the internet is really nice (and keeps my Dutch on a decent active level).
