Wat is dit voor hoogspannings meetinstrument?

TIjdens het opruimen van de schuur van wijlen mijn schoonvader vond ik een instrument waar ik van wil weten wat het is:

Omdat mijn schoonvader bij de PEN storingsdiensten liep, vermoed ik dat het een soort (hoog)spanning detector is. Ik heb zelf een electrotechnische achtergrond en heb over het aparaat 1600V gezet. Daar gebeurde nog niets. Ik had verwacht dat er licht uit de opening zou komen (zoals bij een neon lamp).

Toen heb ik het apparaat opengeschroefd:




Het bevat dus een soort gas ontladings buis. In het buisje zit echter een scherp puntje aan een kant. Mogelijk voor corona effect?

Omdat het in een lederen omhulsel zit, zal het wel bedoeld zijn geweest om mee te nemen in de gereedschap kist. Maar als hoogspanningstester lijkt me dit toch wel een eng ding.

Wie weet hoe dit gebruikt werd? En wordt het mogelijk nog steeds gebruikt?
