Aldi notebook p15648

Ik heb vanmorgen de ALDI P15648 notebook gekocht ...

Ik wil, naast mijn desktop systeem wat Ubuntu 19.10 draait, een Windows 10 systeem hebben, maar ik wil er hoofdzakelijk Linux op draaien.

Na een poosje exerceren met het 'beestje' begint het vermoeden te komen dat hij volgende week weer terug mag naar Aldi. Jammer.

Als W10 laptop is hij denk ik best de prijs waard, maar ik krijg met geen mogelijkheid Linux op het apparaat.
Zelf het starten van een Live-CD of de installatie cd van Arch lukt niet.

Bij het booten van de USB stick zie ik heel kort enige aktiviteit, maar daarna niets meer, met een zwart scherm.

Een van de issues zou kunnen zijn dat deze laptop een Nvidia grafische optie heeft, maar ik heb ook geprobeerd te booten met de 'NOMODESET' optie, ook zonder resultaat.

Wie o wie heeft een briljant idee ??

Ik wacht met spanning terwijl ik verder experimenteer.

Ik probeer altijd meerdere live cd’s en hoop dat de andere distro het wel doet.

Probeer anders even "Secure Boot" in je BIOS uit te zetten. Vaak is dit het euvel.

Maar ik had Ubuntu, Manjaro, Gentoo , Arco Linux, Arch (kaal; installatie) en Fedora geprobeerd, nadat ik "Secure Boot" uitgeschakeld had.

1. Connecting to a terminal
I followed the instructions to edit the commands before booting, namely replacing quiet splash with nomodeset and then pressing F10 or Ctrl+X to boot (instructions are provided here). After I booted, I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F6 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 repeatedly one after the other. After several tries (had to reboot and retry several times), I eventually got a terminal with ultra low resolution where I had to enter my login and password, which I did.

2. Uninstalling the wrong Nvidia driver
I used the command provided by Marmayogi to uninstall the incorrect Nvidia driver:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

The next time I rebooted Ubuntu, I was able to access the login page and GUI in ultra low resolution, like before I installed the wrong Nvidia driver.

3. Installing the correct Nvidia driver
Here I followed the instructions provided by Marmayogi in his comment to my question, except for the installation command of the Nvidia driver which was incorrect as it has changed (see the answer by Kerry Kobashi in this post for details):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-410 (this is the new command, also check version number of driver first!)
Reboot.
After rebooting the GUI was in a normal resolution (except GRUB which was still in low resolution, but it's less of a problem). To check that everything went well, I issued the following command: lsmod | grep nvidia, and there was output, so the installation was successful.

Here I am want to stress out that you need to check which version of the Nvidia driver you need (i.e. which is compatible with your graphics card). You can check on the Nvidia website which products are supported by each driver (the latest one is usually the best if you have a recent graphics card). Not doing so and blindly following instructions in another post which did not specify this is what led me to having all these problems in the first place (unfortunately, this point is too often ignored in a lot of posts I've seen on the subject). Also when choosing the version, I read somewhere that you only need to write the main version (don't bother about the number after the point, so if latest driver is 418.56, just write 418).

I will try this later tonight. I *did* try to boot with the added 'nomodeset' but where I found that suggestion, it was not mentioned to remove 'quiet splash'.

Hopefully this does it. Ill be back with the results

Ok - The laptop goes back to Aldi. Its a relatively nice laptop but no Linux == no deal.

Every attempt has resulted in a black screen and no activity on the usb-drive after the first brief moment, and no way to find out what messages might have been produced. (ctr-alt-f# didnt have any effect and the Bios has not many possibilities to try.)

Ik denk dat ie gewoon een stuk tekst gekopieerd en geplakt heeft, zijn andere posts zijn gewoon in het Nederlands.

Je zou de Debian netinstall ISO kunnen proberen. Deze specifieke ISO's bevatten ook de gesloten drivers.

Heb je gekeken of je in je BIOS de Nvidia-GPU kan uitzetten? Dat zou installatie toch een stuk makkelijker moeten maken. Achteraf kan je dan nog zien of je de GPU aan de praat krijgt.

Jammer genoeg kan je in de Bios settings verrassend weinig. Zeker niets met de GPU.

Ok... bedankt allemaal. Ook de suggestie van @Borromini heeft geen resultaat opgeleverd. De ALdi (Medion) laptop gaat terug en de Lenovo, die ik 2 dagen eerder gekocht had, blijft. Kost mij enkele honderden euros meer, maar ja, als het vakkundig dichtgetimmerd is....
