Pentium 4 L1 cache grootte?

Hoe groot is de L1 cache van een p4?

Ik heb op een aantal sites gekeken (o.a. ome tom) en er worden hele verhalen aan de cache gespendeerd maar nergens staat de grootte.

Voor zover ik heb begrepen is de L2 cache nog steeds 256 (net als p3)

Sharkexreme zegt hetvolgende:

Level 1 cache is normally split between the instruction and data caches, both of which are 16KB on the Pentium III. This go 'round, Intel has decreased the data cache to 8KB and has re-implemented the instruction cache to store micro-ops in the path of the program execution so that results of program branches are integrated into the same cache line.

de p3 had 32 (16 instr. en 16 data) en bij de p4 is de data cache verkleind maar over de instructie cache zeggen ze niets. is die hetzelfde en is de l1 cache dus 8+16=24?

While Pentium III is equipped with a 16 KB L1 cache for instructions and a 16 KB L1 cache for data, there is only an 8 KB small data L1 cache in Pentium 4, while a pretty nifty feature called 'Execution Trace Cache', which I'll discuss in the next paragraph, replaces the L1 instruction cache of Pentium III.

8KB dus in totaal ..

Het is inderdaad een zielige 8KB. Het mag dan wel eficienter gebruikt worden, maar het blijft klein. Dit is een belangrijke redenen dat de P4 slecht presteert in sommige applicaties.

heeft de p4 geen l1 cache voor instructies meer dan? Ik interpreteerde de text zo:

Pentium III =16 KB L1 cache for instructions and a 16 KB L1 cache for data = 32

Penrtium 4 = 8 kb data cache maar over die instrction cache zegt de text niets. Die is weg?

Lees mijn quote dan .. er staat dat de instruciecache vervangen wordt door een 'nifty feature': 'Execution Trace Cache' .. GEEN instructiecache meer dus.

maar is die nifty featere niet ook een cache met een aantal kb? Ik hoopte gewoon op een site waar staat l1 cache=xxxkb

This is exactly half the size of the L1 data cache of the Pentium III (16KB), so why the reduction in size? Smaller caches have lower latencies so in part it was an attempt to decrease the latency of the L1 cache. In comparison, while the Athlons 2-way set associative 64KB L1 Data Cache has a better hit rate (larger caches have better hit rates) it has a 50% higher latency (3 clocks vs 2 clocks).

Wederom 8, maar ze claimen dat dat de helft is van de p3. De p3 heeft echter niet 16 maar 32 l1 totaal..dus ook hier kijken ze volgens mij niet naar de hele cache....

en dan is er nog die trace cache..

ik moet zeggen dat ik het niet helemaal meer kan volgen...
hoeveel cache zit er nou op een pIV? verschilt het nog per type? (1,4/1,7/etc) en hoeveel cache heeft de XEON dan meer??
Welke apps gebruiken het meeste cache?

Op de intel site werd ik ook niet veel wijzer. Ik hou het maar op 8.......en dan inderdaad nog een trace cache maar waar die precies bij hoort.

Hmmz wazig dit .. dus het is 20KB L1?

Onwijs bedankt! dit lijkt te kloppen met wat ik vermoedde. 8 kb l1 data cache (p3 had 16kb l1 data) en geen execution cache meer (p3 had 16kb l1 execution) maar wel een l1 trace cache waarvan ik nog nooit de grootte had gezien. 12kb dus. 8+12=20! thanks!!!!!
