Worms 3D its a blast!

Ubi Soft has signed the first 3D Worms game ever made. CVG gives you world-first details and all the goss surrounding the project

Team17 is at it again. Worms is loved by practically every self-respecting gamer as one of the most enjoyable titles they first cut their PlayStation teeth on, and one of the only strategy games that truly works on a console. It had been known for some time that the developer would bring the traditionally 2D series into the realms of the third dimension with the games next instalment, but was unwilling to discuss details until today.
Ubi Soft announced this morning that it has grabbed the publishing rights to the PlayStation 2, PC, Game Boy Advance and Gamecube title. Titled Worms Blast, the game was signed off internally last October and, officially, will be released this autumn: Team17 told us today that it expects the PC and PlayStation 2 versions to ship before the end of the year, with the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance outings hitting in early 2002.

Now get this: Worms Blast is to make the move from turn-based play to full real-time action, a real departure from the traditional Worms formula. "Its a different direction for Worms but its got everything familiar from previous games," a spokesperson for the developer told CVG today. Multiplay will still be included.

A far heavier emphasis will be placed on characters in the new game all based on weapons and worms from previous titles - and Team17 even hinted at a plot today. Expect plenty of puzzles to solve and a chance to get to grips with the likes of Chuck the homing pidgeon, Rocky the concrete donkey, the already famous Boggy B, Fletcher the mole, Calvin the super sheep, Stavros the stinky skunk, Suzette (an obvious love interest for Boggy B) and Ethel the old woman, all lovingly created in full 3D. Fans of the series are likely to be getting a little damp between the legs right about now.

Worms: The Next Dimension 11:59 Stuart Bishop

Publisher Ubi Soft has announced that it will distributing Team 17's Worms Blast, the next game featuring the madcap annelids that will take the series into the big wide world of 3D.
Team 17's Worms titles have been a phenomenal success, appealing to gamers around the globe through their combination of action, strategy and comic wit. Until recently the franchise was one of Virgin Interactive's hotter properties, but the announcement of a new game in the Worms Universe has brought with it the shock revelation that the UK-based developer has switched its distribution allegiance to publisher Ubi Soft.

The new title, Worms Blast, features 3D characters and a real-time environment, and represents the franchises' first tentative step into new and differing genres while still maintaining that distinct Worms feel that gamers have come to know and love.

Playable in both single- and multiplayer mode, the title will come complete with both familiar [rocket launcher, grenade, shotgun etc.] and new [sea monster attacks, torpedoes, meteor storms] wacky weapons with which the blow the opposition into smithereens. The aim of the game is to sink your opponent's boat while trying to keep your own afloat. Attacks can be launched either across the open-space divider or underwater.

However, in a slight diversion from previous incarnations, this time around you only get to play one worm which can be chosen from a group of eight that are taken direct from the Worms Universe. Whether or not the one-man-army idea will work as well as the more traditional group combat will have to be seen, but Worms Blast is sure to have fans sniggering quietly to themselves as they witness yet another Team 17 game with a witty cartoon-like sense of humour.

Said Rob Cooper, Managing Director of Ubi Soft (Northern Europe/Australasia/Export), Were delighted to be publishing the series as Worms is one of those evergreen brands that manages to balance a great heritage whilst retaining buoyancy. Fans of the series will not be disappointed as Team 17 have adopted a fresh approach that will enable us to ensure the new range of Worm Blast games will be the biggest yet.

Worms Blast is due for release in the autumn.

Ik denk dat dit spel net zoveel met worms te maken heeft als X-com enforcer met X-com.

Coffee isn't a matter of life and death. It's far more important than that.
