Hi Tweakers,

A couple of days ago I was cleaning my PC and while working on the gpu, my finger got caught in one of the fans and I managed to break off 4 blades.. (I was holding the gpu but the duster I used moved the fans)

I immediately contacted ASUS, but they told me to take it to the shop where I bought it. The problem with this, is that I bought it in Taiwan, so that would be a bit hard for me to do so.

Based on this article (US only though):

https://www.asus.com/us/support/Article/925/

It is possible to do repairs, and not losing the official warranty, without going to Asus.

My question is, what are my options here? Does anyone know if I can replace the fan myself without losing the warranty?

Thank you guys,

Greg

And in English, because I'm a nice guy and although Dutch is the main language here... what kind of Dutchman doesn't speak English?

This is not complicated at all, in Europe, warranty is exclusively handled through the vendor, even if a device is purchased elsewhere. Any support coming from a manufacturer is pretty much always leniency, but honesty where honesty's due: this is no warranty case. Although an accident, the damage is user error, and that's unfortunate. Perhaps your home insurance can help you out, but this probably has some impact on your no-claim and future insurance costs. Considering we have no absolute "right to repair", and the nature of this mishap, you'll probably have to procure a spare part through Asus. When it comes to GPU fans, usually the entire top-frame gets replaced... and this is also where the complication happens with replacing JUST the fan... fitting any standard fan on a GPU mount is never pretty (tie-wrap repairs?), and if you want it perfect: often straight impossible. You're perhaps better off replacing the entire cooler.

There's a few aftermarket coolers available, located here in pricewatch: categorie: Overclocking

Quite contradictory to the past, aftermarket GPU coolers aren't that common anymore... the reason is the vast variation in GPU, VRM, and VRAM configurations... and everything on a modern GPU needs cooling (considering the amount of power draw a GPU has, that's not surprising). You often have the most luck in dedicated aftermarket waterblocks, but even then: ensure that the 1080TI that you specifically have is compatible. Not every 1080TI follows the reference design, and not every non-reference card was so popular that an aftermarket cooler came to be...

Umbrah,

Thank you for your quick response. I forgot to mention, that I'm struggling with the Dutch language, so I though English would be better. I know it was my fault, and I won't ever deny that.

I was able to find the exact fan (model, size, brand) in Germany and in the UK, and ofc on Ali as well. And it is surprisingly easy to swap that fan :)

Too bad that there is no right to repair here yet. I'll wait on what Asus says to my followup questions and I'll figure out the next step.

br00ky,

Thank you as well. I was checking Ali earlier.

At the moment I'm not planning on watercooling just yet.

Thank you both!
