The Sony STR-DE435 five-channel home theater receiver does a fine job of bringing movies home while still respecting music. Sony gives the STR-DE435 a more impressive front panel than its two-channel sibling, and it is an even better buy. The five audio/video inputs switch video as well as audio. This receiver produces 100 watts per channel for all five channels, a big improvement from last year's model. In addition to Dolby Pro Logic, there are nine digital signal processing enhancements for movies or music, such as arena, theater, and hall. These settings synthesize the ambience characteristics of those spaces. Six discrete audio inputs make this receiver Dolby Digital-ready. You can adjust audio input balance using built-in sequential test tones for proper Pro Logic operation, and adjust the delay times for the surround channels to suit your room and listening position. There's a subwoofer output for reproducing the low-frequency movie effects with an optional subwoofer. The high quality, frequency synthesized tuner is the same as used in Sony's most expensive receivers. Direct access tuning makes tuning a snap. Just tap in the radio station's frequency on the numeric keypad of the supplied Sony audio/video system remote or the front panel. Direct-access, or the auto-set feature, makes quick work of setting the 30 station presets. The use of knobs, a large one for volume and smaller ones for bass, treble, and balance, simplifies operation. A switchable bass boost compensates for bass loss when listening at low levels. The STR-DE435 makes getting into home theater affordable.
