Step 1:
You need apcompat.exe this on the Windows2000 CD
?:\Support\Tools\ Open up the support.cab
Note: Windows2000 had buildin cab view or can use WinZip
Extraxt apcompat.exe to winnt or windows folder
You may want make a shortcut for this on the Desktop.
Step 2:
Put in the Need For Speed High Stakes CD,
Quit the NFSHS menu win it pop up.
Step 3:
Run apcompat
Check the box Windows98
click on Browse where NFSHS CD is click on
autorun.exe then "Open" then "OK"
Now the see NSFHS installer start you should know what here
Do a Full install
Note: You will get few error at the end of install that OK no need to worry about it.
1 Error:
Can not run Unicode version of ATL.DLL on Windows95
Please install the correct version
"Just push OK"
2 Error:
Error! Could not open HKEY_DYN_DATA\Config Manager\Enum
"Just push OK"
Step 4:
Rigth Click on the Need For Speed High Stakes shortcut on the Desktop
go to properties you need edit it Change Target from this
"?:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes\nfshs.exe"
to this
"?:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes\nfshs.exe" patchrestart
This tell NFSHS to run multiplayer mode & it only way to get the nfshs to start runing
need to say EA need can fix this but there give eveybody B.S. story about Windows2000
is for business Only & it not for Games we know this not ture.
Step 5:
Download nfshspatch4_44.exe from
http://www.3dfiles.com/patches/needforspeedhighstakes.shtml then install it
Step 6:
Download NFSHS_Win2k_Patch.zip Unzip where you want
Rename ?:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes\3DSetup\3DSetup.exe
to 3DSetup.exe.old
Copy the new 3DSetup.exe & 3dsetup.ini to
?:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes\3DSetup\
run 3DSetup.exe
Step 7:
Copy NFS444_NoCD.exe to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes\
run NFS444_NoCD.exe all done now you must reboot no if or butt about it.
Plaese Note that NFS444_NoCD.exe this doesn't remove copy protection but dose help out in
seeing CDRom in Win200.
Step 8:
After rebooting then go back and del the NFS444_NoCD.exe
Run the fix.reg
"For Direct3D, Note Glide dosen't work at all you will just get is Black Screen sorry"
Final Step 9:
You must be online before runing Need For Speed High Stakes at any time.
Know Problem:
Q: I'am getting a Black Screen after start the game what did I do wrong.
A: DBL Check the following registry settings.

A: Did you install the NFSHS with dual CDRom ? well then you need

"SrcDrive"= ?:\ "Change the ? to match the Frist CDrom drive"
Q: I'am see this Warning Message.
Warning: You hard drive has less than 1MB free space
if encounter problem refer to the reference card.
A: Just push OK all that mean is you are runing NTFS fat drive.
Other Tips:
"Triple Buffer" you went edit the registry settings from this 0 to 1
This help speed up loading time with some Video card.
