Mijn vraag
Ik heb vandaag mijn server ge-upgrade van Debian 8 (Jessie) naar 9 (Stretch). Ik heb deze procedure gevolgd zonder noemenswaardige problemen. Na een herstart bleek ik geen ethernet verbinding meer te hebben. Als eerste /etc/network/interfaces gechecked en daar was inderdaad de entry voor 'eth0' verdwenen. Deze weer toegevoegd:

Na herstart niet het gewenste effect. Dus gaan googlen, veel gevonden maar tot nu toe nog niets tegen gekomen wat een oplossing biedt.

Iemand een idee/hint? Wat kan ik doen om er achter te komen wat er fout gaat/welke config niet goed is doorgekomen bij de upgrade?

De r8169 is niet geblacklist ergens in /etc/modprobe.d/* ?
Anders zou je hem in Debian kunnen toevoegen aan /etc/modules.

Wat ook kan is dat de firmware nu nog niet in je initrd zit en dus niet beschikbaar is tijdens het booten.
Dan helpt wellicht een update-initramfs draaien met -u en -k <kernel_version>

Edit:
Lees nu pas goed je greps, hij is inderdaad geblacklist in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.
Dat even uit commenten !

Leuk dat je uitvoer van 'ifconfig' post, maar het is beter om dan 'ifconfig -a' te gebruiken, zodat je alle interfaces ziet en niet alleen die 'up' zijn. In de uitvoer die je net hebt gedumpt (zet die nog even in quote tags erbij, het is een lange lijst en dat scheelt dan scrollen) staat wel dit:

Je hebt idd netjes een eth0 interface, maar er staat erver niets over waarom deze niet online komt. Er staat ook niets over eventueel hernoemen van de interface. Kijk dus eens naar welke interfaces je werkelijk hebt, want die is met de upgrade zeer waarschijnlijk verandert. Nu is het wellicht ens3p0 bijvoorbeeld.

Tevens, als je dat voor de upgrade niet had, is het wellicht noodzakelijk om het package 'firmware-realtek' te installeren. Als er nu wel firmware nodig is, dan zal je netwerk ook falen online te komen met dezelfde melding 'unable to find device eth0'.

En je interface is niet echt verdwenen, het is je netwerk dat niet online komt. Ik pas de topictitel een beetje aan.

Dat. Maar nog moderner is iproute2 ipv. het oude net-tools:

Laat gewoon altijd alle interface zien, ook als ze down zijn.

Aanvullende tip voor het vervolg:
lspci -v
laat ook zien welke drivers zijn geladen voor een PCI device. Dan zie je daar ook staan dat r8169 geladen is voor de ethernet controller, en dat grept weer lekker weg in dmesg..

Oke, dat verklaart wel waarom het niet werkt, maar volgens je kernel output was hij er gewoon. Goed om te controleren wat lspci nu zegt dan..

En een rename verschijnt ook gewoon in de kernel log als het goed is, dus dat lijkt niet gebeurd.

Dat werkte ook al voor de upgrade en na aanleiding van een ander link had ik al gecontroleerd of de firmware voor de realtek kaarten op mijn systeem stonden. Dat lijkt dus niet het probleem (was het wel bij veel andere mensen).

@Rukapul, ja, dat had ik dus ook net na m'n opmerking door en er snel bijgezet. ;)

Ik zit zelf ook even achter de oren te krabben. Ik heb twee systemen met vergelijkbare netwerkkaarten, allebei laden de r8169 driver en werken ook gewoon. Eentje is al een oudere installatie van Sid toen 8 nog geen stable was. M'n HTPC waar ik dit nu vanaf post is van juni 2013, ook alweer 4,5 jaar oud en geen issue.

Kijk eens of de r8169 module wel geladen is via 'lsmod'. Zoja, unload de module en laad deze eens opnieuw. Gebruik de -v optie van modprobe om te zien wat er echt gebeurt.

Volgens mij is de die module niet geladen, ten minste ik zie hem niet in de lijst.

Als ik hem nu moet laden, hoe doe ik dat dan? Kan wel wat in linux maar ben geen expert.

Doe eens niet telkens die network restart, maar gewoon met ip link e.d. kijken of je nou echt een interface hebt. Ik heb al te vaak errors gezien met een 'systemctl restart networking' die nergens op sloegen, dat ik eerder een 'ifup' doe van de interface die ik up wil brengen. Nu zit ik al een wat langere tijd met systemd te werken, maar had Debian nou met 8 of 9 pas systemd? Want dat zit je nu een beetje in de weg denk ik.

Dat is maar tijdelijk.

Er zit nog een hiaat in je verhaal: in je kernel logs heb je output van r8169 (dus de driver was ooit geladen), maar in de lspci output is hij niet in gebruik.

Dat laatste dacht ik in eerste instantie, maar er zijn dus 2 verschillende outputregels mbt. kernel drivers

Voorbeeld:

Dat klopt overigens ook, want je lsmod output bevestigt dat de module niet eens geladen was. Maar volgens je kernel logs was hij dat ooit wel. Iets klopt er niet, kernel modules unloaden zichzelf niet.

Grep nog eens op r8169 in je /etc en /var/log ?

Enige dat ik in de verre verte kan bedenken dat je netwerkdrivers zou kunnen unloaden met een goede reden is iets van PCI passthrough in een virtualisatiepakket.

In de logs ook niet. Op 10 April klaagde hij wel over missing firmware files maar op die datum zat het systeem nog op Debian 8 en werkte prima. Ook is hij na ie datum nog een aantal keren ge-reboot.

Na herstart van het systeem moet ik nog steeds de driver manueel laden mbv modprobe. Greps op de logs levert geen andere hits op op 'r8169'.

De r8169 is niet geblacklist ergens in /etc/modprobe.d/* ?
Anders zou je hem in Debian kunnen toevoegen aan /etc/modules.

Wat ook kan is dat de firmware nu nog niet in je initrd zit en dus niet beschikbaar is tijdens het booten.
Dan helpt wellicht een update-initramfs draaien met -u en -k <kernel_version>

Edit:
Lees nu pas goed je greps, hij is inderdaad geblacklist in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.
Dat even uit commenten !

Dat moet een overblijfsel zijn van Debian 8. Ik heb 'm niet meer namelijk, alleen een blacklist.conf.dpkg-bak en daar staat het ook niet in. Het bestand is van 2011, dus eigenlijk al heel lang niet meer aanwezig. Kijk even wat er nog meer in staat, want kans is groot dat je 't bestand gewoon weg kan gooien.

Wil je zeker weten dat het bestand eigenlijk niet meer gebruikt wordt, verwijder dan eerst alle obsolete packages (kan je snel vinden via aptitude) inclusief purge (zodat de config ook weg is) en verifieer dan met apt-file welk package het bestand mogelijk heeft.
# apt -y install apt-file
# apt-file update
# apt-file search /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Als bij het laatste commando geen uitvoer is, zou je het bestand niet meer moeten hebben.

Erg apart. Mijn PC heeft deze:

Dus die 'brakke' NIC. Nooit last van gehad. Niet aan 't begin, niet erna en nu nog steeds niet. Altijd fatsoenlijke snelheid gehad. Je artikel heeft het over drie Ubuntu releases uit 2011 en ervoor en de toen huidige Debian Testing. TS draaide geen Testing, maar Stable en is van old-stable naar current-stable gegaan.

Deze installatie draait al sinds november 2011, dus ik zou in theorie er last van moeten hebben gehad. Wellicht was 't toen al opgelost in Unstable, of heb ik gewoon geluk gehad. Ik had destijds geen enkel probleem om m'n internetlijn dicht te trekken met ~100 Mbps. Ik mis die tijd toch wel, nu ik maar 20 Mbps heb.

OK, gechecked of de blacklist een dependancy had, was niet het geval dus kon veilig weg. Reboot en inderdaad netwerk komt nu netjes op, probleem lijkt gefixed.

Blijf ik me wel afvragen waar die blacklist vandaan komt. Ik heb de server ongeveer 2 jaar geleden helemaal vers geïnstalleerd op debian 8 (kwam van ubuntu). Eigenlijk probleemloos 24 op 24 in actie als thuisserver (samba, windows via virtualbox en een pihole). Na de upgrade openbaarde dit probleem zich. Als die file er al eerder was, waarom had debian 8 daar dan geen last van?

Omdat Debian 8 een andere module mee leverde die gebruikt werd en nu overbodig is. Oude config wil nog wel eens achterblijven na een upgrade, zeker iets generiek als blacklist.conf. Die had je immers zelf ook kunnen aanmaken of aanpassen. Als dat laatste is gedaan, of het verliest de staat van het bestand hoe deze was, dan wordt het met rust gelaten. Met dus helaas dit tot gevolg. Gelukkig weerhoudt een blacklist optie er niet van om een module met de hand te laden. Het zorgt er alleen voor dat het niet automatisch gedaan wordt.

Het is niet enkel dat artikel, het internet staat er vol mee. Volgens mij ondersteunt r8169 bijna alle controllervarianten van Realtek, zal er dus wel eentje ooit problematisch van zijn geweest. Dat het voor de meeste mensen altijd gewerkt heeft zegt dan niet zoveel meer..

Je had blijkbaar een andere driver die werkte. En volgens mij is de enige optie dan Realtek's eigen r8168.
Omdat Debian 8 een andere module mee leverde die gebruikt werd en nu overbodig is.
Die is er dus sowieso nooit geweest. Pas sinds stretch is er een dkms package - in non-free. Maar die blacklist suggereert al dat het handwerk was.

Die heb je dus zelf geinstalleerd. Dat blijft de meest waarschijnlijke hypothese.

Kans bestaat dan je nog ergens een r8168.ko hebt in /lib/modules misschien kun je aan de timestamps (liefst creation) daarvan nog achterhalen wanneer hij was geinstalleerd.

Nee, in /lib/modules vind je de modules van die betreffende kernel, niet de kernel zelf. ;) Kijk maar eens in de 3.2 en 3.16 directories, als 't goed is, vind je daar ook je r8169 module, met mogelijk dus nog een r8168. Bij mij:

Dom, had moeten zien dat dat directories waren... Die andere module staat er inderdaad tussen. Daarmee lijkt het dus verklaart.
