Hi Everyone,

My name is Lasrfocus, I'm a producer, learning how to be a dj.

I've got an audio setup with a Focusrite 2i2 linked to my Yamaha HS7's. I'd like to use my Numark Mixtrack pro DJ-controller with Serato, while making use of my Focusrite interface rather than the build in audiointerface of the mixtrack pro.

I've already done some research. And to me it seems I'd have to buy 2 RCA to TRS- cables, to then route the audio from my Mictrack Pro Controller through the TRS inputs of the Focusrite.

First of all I'd like your opinion on this theory.

Secondly, does anyone know a way to just use the Mixtrack pro as a controller while still receiving the audio in the headphones, this would be even better!

Please let me know what you thing is best

Thank you in advance

Lasrfocus

Routing your Mixtrack through the Focusrite can sort of work. Just keep in mind (you probably know this) the inputs on the Focusrite are MONO, so you would need to connect both Inputs 1 & 2 for stereo.

From the 2i2 manual:
- you can connect balanced XLR, but the pre-amp auto configures to 'microphone' mode.
- you can connect unbalanced TS jacks, this is for line or instrument.
- you can connect balanced TSR jacks, same: line or instrument.

You can use two 'RCA to TS jack' cables for this. I am not sure how the Monitor knob and Direct Monitoring switch on the 2i2 affect the output... does it mix input with the audio device output and also control the volume?

However, it does not seem like a very practical solution.

Connecting the speakers directly to the Mixtrack looks more convenient like you already wrote.

Some thoughts, maybe they are of some use. Please keep in mind I have never used the Mixtrack Pro or Serato.

Routing audio from the Mixtrack Pro to the Focusrite is possible but will still give you the fidelity of the weakest link in the route (i.e. the Mixtrack). This is likely to not be an improvement.

I assume the Mixtrack Pro Controller is a hybrid MIDI controller and AUDIO interface device. So, if you look at your hardware in Windows or MacOS, you should also see separate devices for them.

In Serato you should be able to choose a (midi) control surface and an audio device separately. This:
Setup Screen, Audio and MIDI suggests this is possible, but I can't tell for sure.

In theory: set the audio device to the Focusrite, set the midi device to the Mixtrack Pro and you're done.

This is under the assumption the 'mixer' of the controller (especially the cross fader) is part of the MIDI device (and mixing is done in the software) and not (an analogue) part of the actual audio interface...

Not entirely sure what you mean with the second part about the headphone. If you use the Focusrite, you can always plug your headphone into that?

Or do you want to be able to (pre)listen to/monitor a single deck? This might be a problem; the controller has 2 stereo output channels (Master Mix and Cue Channel), the Focusrite has only one stereo channel.

If the software allows it choose the Focusrite device for the master, and the Mixtrack or onboard sound device for the cue. However... entry level software (like Serato DJ Intro or Virtual DJ Home Free) will probably have limitations in this area.

I was indeed referring to the capability of monitoring (to cue) a single deck.

And My main concern is that I don't want to reroute all my cables everytime I want to practice dj-ing. In that case I could just buy RCA to TRS or XLR cables and route directly from the Mixtrack to the Yamaha Speakers.

The fact that there won't be an improvement in sound doesn't bother me that much. I was just wondering if it is a posibility to route my mixtrack through my focusrite to avoid having to swicth cables everytime.

And I will dig deeper in the Serato intro and Serato Full version to find the settings to change my audiointerface for the master, but i had already read that this wasn't possible in Serato.

I think the Monitoring knob is solely for changing the output volume, although I could be wrong.

But so either way, I need 2 RCA to TRS cable. Afterwards I can still choose whether I route them through the Focusrite or plug them in the Yamaha monitors directly.

Thanks for your help, seems like you know a great deal about audio! :)
