Hello

I got admitted to embedded systems masters on Twente university, and TU Eindhoven.

What do you guys think which one is better and for what reason? I would love to hear people who also went to one this universities or the actual course.

I will also need to move to the city of university. My girlfriend however only got admitted to Twente. So I'm considering that if eindhoven that much better that i want to commute or live separately.

Answers can be on dutch also ofc!! _/-\o_

City wise Enschede is better than Eindhoven according to most people (based on my experience). Downside is that Enschede is more remote than Eindhoven: The connection to the west is fine, but that is also the only real connection there is.

I wouldn't expect too much differences between the universities. I studied in Twente and wasn't a big fan of some of the people in the robotics department. But I don't know how much that affected their actual quality, since I went into a different direction (it wasn't just me not being a big fan of some of the people there, they also weren't a big fan of each other).

And it depends on the electives you are going to take, and also your internship and master thesis will depend on this. But in general: commuting is going to be a hell between Enschede and Eindhoven, you really should remove that as an option. If your girlfriend is only admitted in Twente, I would just go for Twente. Possible differences are too minor to worry about it in my opinion between these two universities.

I tend to chose twente for the reasons you also noted, i just want to make sure that my education is the best possible :)

The strange thing for me that, the website, design, info available on it, and the more strict application, also more detailed emails, all pointed to the direction that eindhoven tu is probably noticable better. But somehow everyone is saying that the difference is not that huge..

One upside as i saw is the nice uni laptop service at eindhoven for example, but it is not that significant.

Huub, Huub, Barbatruc!

It highly depend on the major you choose since I did a different one with verry minor in common I can tell you much from that perspective. I'm totally opposed against the way Twente changed all their bachelors (loads of interdisciplinary courses shared between bachelors in order to reduce costs and have as much people in a room when a professor talks). However the multidisciplinary bullshit didn't reach the Masters as far as I know.

Going from Eindhoven to Enschede every other weekend (assuming your girlfriend will visit you half of the time) is pretty okay. Ofcourse it costs some time but get yourself a book, read stuff or watch a series and it's not the worst thing.

Enschede beeing remote can be anoying,l though, also the absence of al lot (especially compared to Eindhoven) of commerical/industrial activity can be limiting -> need to move for a master assignment.

For the rest, Enschede is absolutely not to most thrilling city (and most students leave directly after they graduated) however it's a nice city I would say, you won't be bored if you life there for 2 years.

Laptop service is (or at least few years ago) comparable in Enschede. However Imho the worst reason to select a university.

Bit offtopic, but that also depends on the major. Electrical engineering does not have many interdisciplinary courses except those that simply are valid for many studies (such as the basic math ones). They also did have many changes though, I am also not really sure if I was in favor of those. But as you said, it does not affect the master. Although there he will have interdisciplinary courses, since embedded systems is on the edge of several majors ;).

The generic master courses for my major I did had a few tens of students, while the more specific ones generally had closer to ten students, sometimes even less. But that really depends on the master.

Going in the weekends between Enschede and Eindhoven is fine indeed, just not every day. But while in general I wouldn't advice Twente for the non-technical studies (the ratings of those are not really impressive), for the technical ones I would simply choose Twente with your situation. Unless you really want to do a specific direction in your master which would not be available in Twente. (No idea what, but for example Eindhoven has an automotive technology master that Twente does not have. So there are differences).

Thanks for the replies guys I really appreciate! :)

At Eindhoven i can already take a look at courses, and streams avaible (set of courses as a direction), but in Twente its not directly visible for some reason :/... I think i will email the uni to get a course description, so i can see the differences. That could be a deciding factor I guess. But on the other hand, this 4TU thing (in theory) means i can take some courses from other school, like delft and eindhoven.

If we go to seperate school in the begining im sure we will need to move seperatly, since i will have at least 4 uni days. I dont know about her premaster thought, but i dont want to put her throught the traveling all the time either. I dont know about after third quarter :/ But weekends are free to spend the time together.

So if i understand correctly what GoldenSample says, maybe big difference in the world rankings between eindhoven and twente comes from other bachelors and master being not so good? Its so silly btw that they rate a whole university.. how can i know if my embedded systems master is good or not.. they should rate the faculties at least or i dont know..

Im pretty sure i will also move after master if i will live in Enschede, however Eindhoven i reaaaallly like since wizzair is flying to my home town HUN - Budapest from Eindhoven for 20-25 euro. And i saw a huge amount of job offers from a lot of companies. So if i would live in Eindhoven I think its possible that we could both find a job there, and im suspicious that maybe even after twente master i will end up there.

Another really anoying thing with trains is the money. Im not a dutch citizen yet, and i have no relatives working here, (im working here for 2 years nearly, 1 as electrical engineer) so i cannot get the student trravel product for free trains as far as i know :'( :-(
