Hoezeer ik fan ben van vaste computers vast aansluiten, heb je situaties waarin je van je eigen regels af wilt wijken. Zoals PC voor zoonlief die max een halfjaar op huidige plek gaat staan, waar UTP door muur het betere hak- en breekwerk zou betekenen en UTP niet door muur niet babyproof zou zijn.

Dus toch maar WiFi. Ik heb prima storingsvrije dekking in 5GHz op die locatie en ik heb een goede mPCIe adapter op PCIe->mPCIe bracket gemonteerd. Zou prima moeten gaan? Helaas, nope :'(


Gebruikte hardware:
Core2Quad Q8200
Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L moederbord (Intel G31 chipset, onboard RTL8169 Gb LAN)
4GB DDR2
Seagate 500GB SATA HDD
Broadcom BCM4360 WiFi NIC <- hier gaat het dus om

Software:
Linux Mint 18 (dus op basis van Ubuntu 16.04 LTS), alles up to date.
Kernel 4.4.0-21-generic x86_64 (default dus)

Specifiek voor deze kaart geinstalleerd:
bcmwl-kernel-source (stond al geinstalleerd, maar heb gelezen dat herinstallatie soms helpt)
firmware-b43-installer (zou niet nodig zijn, toch geprobeerd. Veranderde niets)

Nu zijn er voor Broadcom NICs verschillende drivers beschikbaar. Voor de BCM4360 wordt de non-free proprietary driver van Broadcom aangeraden, 'wl'. Dat heb ik dus ook geinstalleerd.

Stand van zaken:

- kaart wordt in lspci gedetecteerd: hardwarematig is hij er.
- wl driver wordt in kernel geladen en detecteert kaart, incl toewijzing interface
- bij ifconfig en iwconfig zie ik de kaart staan

Maar...

- zodra ik iets probeer te doen ermee krijg ik "No such device".
- Ook de GUI tools hebben geen mogelijkheid er iets mee te doen.

OK... zou allemaal moeten werken toch? Ik kan met sudo ifconfig wlp1s0 down/up de adapter aanspreken. Bovendien kan iw hem ook vinden:

Maar als ik vervolgens poging doe om netwerken te scannen, gebeurt er niets:

- terwijl ik weet dat er op deze locatie zeker 10 SSID's in 5GHz te detecteren zijn (waarvan 6 van mij, 2 AP's met elk 3 SSIDs :z ) en een hele sloot in de 2.4GHz (en dat met m'n 1x1 SiSo mobiele telefoon, dus met z'n drie antennes zou de BCM4360 beter moeten kunnen).

Over antennes gesproken, die dingen zitten er fysiek op en aansluiting lijkt goed genoeg. Wil best geloven dat een van de drie mogelijk wat minder is, maar alledrie zodanig slecht verbonden dat zelfs de AP een meter verderop niet gevonden wordt - nope, dat is niet aannemelijk.

Iemand suggesties voor hoe deze kaart wakker te schoppen dat hij wel iets gaat doen?


Edit:
Voor de zekerheid een brakke oude Sitecom WLA-5000 USB NIC erbij gepakt. Ding maakt gelijk succesvol verbinding met bekende SSID. Rest van de stack doet dus duidelijk wat het moet doen, probleem is specifiek met de BCM4360.

Heb je toevallig Secure Boot aan staan oid? Google er eens op iig, daar krijg je vast wel een antwoord mee. :)
Olifant? Dit is puur de melding dat de module niet GPL-compliant is. Wat bij BCM helaas de norm is.

Iig wordt de module wel netjes geladen, dus wat dan ook er mis is, lijkt me niet dat dit het technisch probleem is:

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110 had je ook al gevonden mag ik aannemen? Daarbij, de module wordt dan wel geladen, maar er mist dus blijkbaar nog wat. Je hebt niet heel veel van dmesg overgenomen hier. Er wordt vaak nog extra meldingen gemaakt zonder naar de module of hardwarenaam te verwijzen.

Mbt die link: ja, had ik gezien, maar de info is oud; mijn chip (BCM4360) als mijn Ubuntu/Mint versie ontbreken, dus dat schiet niet zo op.

Wel nog iets geprobeerd op basis ervan: bcmwl dkms geprobeerd (sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source en vervolgens sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get install broadcom-sta-dkms). Dat levert weer een wl-module op en zelfde gedrag als voorheen helaas.

Update:

Heb even een andere mPCIe NIC geprobeerd met Broadcom BCM43224 chipset - een oudere 2x2 WiFi-n geval, maar zelfde wl driver. Ding werkt gelijk.

Oftewel probleem zit in hardware van de BCM4360-module, danwel in support ervoor in de wl driver. En aangezien dat proprietary Broadcom is houdt het op als de nieuwste versie die beschikbaar is voor m'n OS niet doet wat ik wil :'(

Voorlopig kan ik (traag) vooruit met deze NIC, maar ben er weer eens aan herinnerd waarom ik geen fan ben van Broadcom. Ik heb hier een monster van een Qualcomm-Atheros QCA9880 module liggen die niet in de mPCIe-PCIe adapter past die ik gebruik. Oplossing daarvoor is onderweg, dus binnenkort daarmee an de slag. Eens zien of ik deze BCM4360 in de tussentijd kan doneren voor Terw_Dan's salontafel :P

Wifi drivers + Linux = vaak troubles. Inderdaad zijn oudere kaarten beter supported dan de jongere. Intel werkt vaak nog het best.

Atheros drivers zijn meestal bulletproof, Intel ook redelijk (zij het met onverklaarbare prut als geen monitor mode...), maar Realtek en Broadcom is hoofdpijn. Weet nog niet helemaal wat ik van Mediatek moet vinden. Vroeger was RaLink geweldig, maar heb de indruk dat sinds de overname eigenlijk niets meer open gedaan wordt :'(

RaLink en goed? Laat mij niet lachen! Mijn eerste eigen computer had bij het moederbord een mooi PCI kaartje met een RaLink wifi chip erop (en bluetooth via USB) maar de snelheid en stabiliteit waren om te huilen. Gebruikte ik de open driver, dan moest ik blij zijn met een snelheid van ongeveer 200 KiB/s (wel stabiel) en als ik via ndiswrapper werkte, haalde ik makkelijk de 2 MiB/s, maar was de verbinding zelf instabiel als wat (paar sec full speed, daarna zo goed als weg voor 10-20 sec). Ik geloof er dus niet zo in dat ze zo goed waren als men zegt.

Broadcom is hoe dan ook ruk.
