Dual processors, 5/2/1 (if you get a Rev.2 board), support for up to 1 gig of RAM and Coppermine support to boot. It still uses the Intel BX chipset. Why? Well, the Intel i820/840 solution with RDRAM is just too expensive even when price isn't an obstacle, and the VIA 133A chipset is still in its early stages of support for SMP, so the BX is still the leading choice for dual procs. Supermicro has long since proven their quality to me. While this board may not be the overclocking master, when you're running dual 850MHz CPUs (again, you'll need a Rev.2 board to support those), who really cares? Speed, stability and dual CPUs...it just don't get any better than that. Before purchasing, make sure that your board has the right voltage regulator.

While it's not Steve Jobs' "new Dual CPU G4", the GodBox has 700MHz (aggregate) on the new G4. 850s are still pretty pricey on a per-MHz basis, but this is the God Box and we're tweakin' it to the limit.
Some of you will say, "Why not the Athlon?" Well, it's simple: SMP is damn sweet to have. A Linux, NT, or BeOS system with two PIIIs is gonna rock an Athlon system to 1974 and back. Call us back when we can take that mutha to SMP.

RAM:
512MB PC133 SDRAM
Sadly, memory prices were going up last month, and haven't seen any downward movement this month. For a machine like this, 512MB just makes sense. You may only need 256, but I'd at least recommend getting PC133. The price isn't that much more, and it's going to work the same as PC100, but is normally higher quality.

Guillemot Hercules 3D ProphetII GTS 64MB
Hot Damn! 64MB of RAM and the GeForce II GTS chipset all thrown onto blue PCB makes the Guillemot card the choice for the God Box. If you're looking to shave a few bucks off this machine, the 32MB card is a perfectly good choice, but if you're goin' all the way...don't let us hold ya back.
Of course, the options for video in a box like this are going to be dictated by what kind of use you intend to put it to. Video-lovers will need to turn their attention to the awesome Matrox G400MAX. It has impressive video capabilities, and DualHead rocks. And those interested in the BeOS will find it friendlier than the GeForce.

Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! Platinum
The near-death state of their major competitor makes Creative Labs a shoe in for this position. Of course, even before Aureal started choking, Creative Labs was a good choice, thanks to their aggressive courting of non-Win9x OSes.
The Platinum not only offers all the features of the full Live, but adds an easy to access panel with all sorts of audio connections. Even Caesar likes it

If there's one thing I've learned from doing the system recs. is that I can't get anything past the Ars readers. After a previous update I got a mailbox full of flames for not recommending a RAID setup. Well here you go: 160MB/s of data bandwidth, and supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 0+1, and 0+5, and sporting 4MB of cache expandable to 128MB, this would a kickass to have if you have to have RAID.

Hardware DVD decoding is the only way to fly, especially if you've got the extra cash to throw around.

160MB/s transfer rate, 15,000 RPM, 4MB of cache, 18 Gigs of storage per drive, and you could probably fry eggs for breakfast on 'em. Not a bad little bundle for the price. Since we're talkin' RAID here, we're talkin' multiple drives. Choose your quantity, but 2 should cut it if you're just looking for speed and not for data integrity.

We're puttin' all our apps and OS on the RAID array, so we need somewhere to store our MP3s. We might as well step it up to 7200 RPM, no sense in having slow storage. MP3s and whatever else you want...no storage limit really.

Plextor PlexWriter 12/4/32 CDRW
Burn baby, burn! Next to DVD-R this is the way to go. Plextor is the name in SCSI CD-ROMs, and I've never heard anything bad about them, so their Top o' the line gets its shot in the God Box. 'Course you can get a 12/10/32 in IDE if speed is a problem for you...it's even less expensive ($289) but the God Box gets all SCSI here.

So I'm updating the recs here and thinking WTF? Still the fastest SCSI DVD-ROM drive I can find is 6X? I just can't do it, can't recommend something that slow/old. So we go IDE for our DVD. Please don't hurt me.

Sure it's only 21" (heh...only) but, it's a damn sweet 21". Able to pull off a mind-bending 2048x1536 resolution (at 75Hz no less) this tube looks to be the nicest I can find. I've seen Hitachi monitors in person, and it's hard to beat their flatness.

Last month I took these speakers off the God Box due to availability problems. I did this right as Klipsch solved their availability issues. My bad. Well, they're available again and a-d0gG (aka: St1nkyp4ntz) says they rock, so I'll put 'em back in the God Box. I've got some Klipsch subwoofer goodness here in the Ars Orbiting HQ and it's amazing.

What a great combination. The wheel doohickey of the IntelliMouse plus Microsoft's new IntelliEye laser tech. Never clean your mouse balls again, and use the Railgun like a masta (if you can handle high sensitivity!). Check out our review.

Fight RSI and have your arrow keys arranged correctly at the same time! The Elite version is cheaper, but those arrow keys are really annoying. Plus the Pro has a bunch of wacky (and surprisingly addictive) keys for controlling media and 'net apps.
