1. What is the real download/ upload speed (MB/s) when you try to transfer via different protocol? (AFP, CIFS, FTP, HTTP, etc...) We would like toknow if the performance issue happened with a specific protocol only.
The same speeds and problems apply to every protocol. The one's i've tested are AFP, CIFS and FTP.
2. Please check the settings in DSM Web management >> Control Panel >> Network >> Network Interface >> jumbo frame. RESET to default 1500 and test again.
These settings are at default (1000MBit, Jumbo Frames off, MTU=1500). I've also tested Jumbo Frames on and MTU=9000, no difference.
3. Please help to connect your disk station and PC directly (without any router/switch in between) and check the performance issue again.
Tried this, no difference.
4. Please perform SMART test on the hard disks and change defected hard disk if needed.
I SMART checked the disks before I plugged them into the NAS (last week) and reformatted them to EXT4. No SMART errors.
5. Check if the destination volume is almost full.
One disk is about 70% full, the other about 25%. I have the same problem copying from both.
6. Keep the source the same, change destination to other PC as a comparison.
Tried a Windows 7 PC (Gbit ethernet), a Macbook Air (100mbit ethernet), a MacBook Pro (WiFi) and a iMac (WAN through 50Mbit fiber). No difference.
7. Make sure the cpu usage of disk station and your PC is not overloaded when you perform the test and also do not open DSM when performing the test.
When I'm copying CPU is around 40%, RAM is about 30%. All computers are very new and fast, so they have no load when copying.
8. Make sure you do not enable "speed limit" or "traffic control" function in DSM
Speed limit is disabled, as are all other services (apart from FTP and AFP/CIFS).
9. Disable firewall/ anti-virus software on PC
There is no firewall or anti-virus on the Macs. I've disabled both on the Windows 7 system, no difference.
10. Disable DOS/firewall rules on DS (DS213air DOS may influence 10MB/s performance)
I don't have any Firewall rules set up on the USB station.
11. In low-end CPU models (such as MARVELL 628x), it will come out the same low performance regardless its volume type is Raid0 or Raid1 due to it consume full CPU resource.
There is no RAID possibility, I use USB drives.
12. Disable file indexing option of all shares
File indexing is disabled.
13. Disable media indexing and related services
All related services (Multimedia Database, Media server, iTunes, Audio Station, File Station, Download Station) are disabled.
14. If it goes for windows file service, please enable SMB2 protocol and Opportunistic Locking of Samba
Both are enabled by default on Windows 7 (according to
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/296264).
15. Remove all software with performance impacts on Windows client PC such as Office File Validation plug-in on Office 2003
I don't have Office installed on my Windows client. It only has Windows and several games on it.
16. Disable CPU consuming packages: Video Station/Audio Station/Surveillance Station/Cloud Station/Download Station/Photo Station
All are disabled. CPU usage on the USB Station is near zero.
17. Disable all scheduled backup tasks
No automated backup tasks enabled. I only backup my Macs on a separate external USB drive (not attached to the USB Station).
18. Check if physical memory is exhausted and starting use swap. It would impact performance heavily
On the USB Station memory usage is about 30%. All my clients have plenty of memory and almost never use swap. Tried restarting and closing all applications, no difference.
19. Disable user data collection. Location in DSM: Control Panel >> Info Center >> Usage >> Enable usage information sharing.
There is no Info Center on my USB Station, I do have all logs disabled.
20. Windows manager one click on exe file would prefetch the whole content so if the .exe file is large it would hang the system.
I don't have .exe's on the NAS. Only audio, video and doc files.
21. Check the file in source and/or destination shared folder is NOT an encrypted shared folder
I don't use encryption at all.
