Canon EOS C300 Mark II
Canon has announced the EOS C300 Mark II Cinema EOS camera, updating its predecessor with a new 8.85 megapixel 35mm sensor allowing 4K shooting. Also new are Dual DIGIC DV5 processors bringing the ability to record 10-bit 4:2:2 4K (UHD or DCI) video internally using the new XF-AVC Codec. Citing customer feedback as a driving force, Canon also claims improvements in dynamic range, operability and ruggedness. The slight resolution boost of the C300 II over its predecessor means it can shoot DCI 4K (4120 x 2160) and the more powerful processing can be recorded as 2x over-sampled 12-bit 4:4:4 DCI 2K and Full HD video.

The EOS C300 Mark II will be available in September for $20,000 in either EF or PL mount.

Canon XC10
Canon has released its XC10 digital camcorder which combines advanced 4K video recording with capable still shooting features. The core features are a Canon-designed 12MP 1" CMOS sensor and a fixed F2.8-5.6 image stabilized lens equivalent to 27.3-273mm for videos and 24.1-241mm for stills.

4K (UHD) video is captured using the XF-AVC Intra codec (which offers bit rates up to 305MBps) and saved to an internal CFast card. An SD card slot is also available although video capture is limited to full HD, up to 60p. 8MP stills can be grabbed from 4K video or you can take 12MP photos as you would on any conventional stills camera.

The XC10 also features a rotating grip, tilting LCD, and built-in Wi-Fi. It measures less than 5 inches (~12.7cm) in each direction and weighs 2.3 lbs (1kg) fully loaded. It uses the same LP-E6 battery as the EOS 5D III and 7D II, among other models.

The XC10 will be available this June and will ship with a SanDisk 64GB CFast 2.0 card at an MSRP of $2499.

DJI Phantom 3
DJI has announced the Phantom 3 in two versions: the Professional, capable of 4K video, and the Advanced, which shoots 1080p. Both capture 12MP stills thanks to a 1/2.3" Sony EXMOR sensor and offer an f/2.8 lens with a 20mm equiv. angle of view. A 3-axis gimbal keeps the camera unit steady in flight.

The Professional model captures 4096 x 2160 4K video at 24p or 3840 x 2160 (UHD) at 24p or 30p. Both models are capable of 1920 x 1080 24/30/60p. Livestreaming to YouTube is possible via DJI's Pilot app. The app and the drone's remote control both allow for access to camera settings including ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation. The Phantom 3 also boasts an upgraded battery with better in-flight sensors and a faster charger.

DJI Ronin-M
Following up on the success of their flagship gimbal stabilizer, DJI has announced the Ronin M, which is half the weight of the original and can carry loads up to 8lbs.
With the halved weight limit, the Ronin M is going to be an excellent gimbal option for many of the smaller cameras out there today, from mirrorless cameras like the GH4 and A7s to Blackmagic's cameras and beyond. It seems that DJI is taking a similar road to Freefly by segmenting their lineup of stabilizers by carrying capacity.
The DJI Ronin M is expected to come in below the $2000 mark and should be available for pre-order by the end of the month.

RED Weapon
Red has unveiled its latest camera body and announced its next-generation 8K sensor. The Weapon body will be produced in magnesium alloy or carbon fiber and is available as an upgrade for users with the 6K 'Dragon' sensor. Anyone making the upgrade to the Carbon Fiber version will then be able to pay extra to get the forthcoming 8K sensor.

The 8K sensor will be 40.96 x 21.6mm (larger than the current Dragon sensor and slightly larger than the Vista Vision format) and will be able to shoot 1.896:1 8K (8192 x 4320 pixels) at up to 60fps. It can also shoot a shorter 2.40:1 aspect ratio at up to 75fps. No other specifications about the camera are available at this time, but some pricing information has been revealed.

The NAB price for the upgrade is $10,000 USD, after that the upgrade price when the 8K unit begins shipping at the end of this year will be $20,000 USD. Furthermore, those who order the 8K unit now will be sent the 6K Weapon when it starts shipping in early July, and will then receive the 8K upgrade when it begins shipping later this year.

Panasonic DVX200
Panasonic announced the 4K successor to the venerable DVX100 at NAB today. The AG-DVX200 is a 4K, handheld camera with a 13X image stabilized lens and a 4/3″ sensor. It has 4K/60P recording on SD cards with Varicam-like V-Log L gamma curve with 12 stops of latitude. The lens is a f/2.8-4.5, 28-365mm equivalent zoom with separate zoom, focus, and aperture rings.

The prototype they showed at the announcement has red accents with carbon-fiber patterns on parts of the camera. It has a full complement of controls on the operator side of the camera along with outputs on the offside.

They say it will be under $5000 USD in the fall of 2015.

Panasonic GH4 Firmware 2.2
Panasonic has announced firmware v2.2 for the GH4 to make it easier to use anamorphic lenses with the camera. The new anamorphic mode allows the camera to capture video from a 4:3 aspect ratio chunk from the middle of the sensor to match the projection of specialist lenses, allowing genuine anamorphic capture, rather than digital simulation of the look.

Anamorphic lenses have a wider horizontal field-of-view than they do vertically, meaning a very wide-format image gets horizontally compressed onto a narrower recording medium. This is then 'stretched' again, either using software or by projecting the footage using another anamorphic lens. The process was originally used in Hollywood to make full use all of a standard film frame when shooting ultra-wide format movies (rather than using a short, wide strip from the middle of each frame), lends a distinctive look to the footage and the way depth and motion are conveyed.

This distinctive look has become highly desirable, to the point that Panasonic said it became aware of GH4 users using anamorphic lenses with the camera's 4K Photo function that shoots 4:3 4K video so that stills can be grabbed from it. Adding anamorphic mode as a full video mode means users have complete control over recording format, bitrate and luminance scale, which aren't available in 4K Photo mode. The faster, stills-orientated autofocus of 4K Photo mode is also disengaged.

The anamorphic mode shoots 3328 x 2496 video at 23.98, 24, 25 or 29.97 fps. However, while the camera will also output 4:3 video over HMDI as a 10-bit 4:2:2 stream, this has to fit within the height constraints of standard 4K footage, so is downscaled to 2880 x 2160 with black bars on either side.
