Windows Update not possible

Hi there,

Hope you understand and writes English because my Dutch is equal to zero!


I have made a complete system restore on a Windows 7 machine.
But now I can't update Windows...!!?

I get this message:

"Can not update. The service is not running. You might need to restart your computer."


I have been through all possible solutions given on Microsoft's KB - no positive results so far.

Can't install SP1 either - not even their "Windows Update Standalone" program...

Tried MS' "Fix-It" - didn't fix anything...


The machine is a Samsung RV510, running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.


Hope there's someone who can help me.


Any illegal solutions will NOT be accepted since it isn't my computer.

Hit Start, type "Services". Scroll down/ find "Windows Update" in the list. Right click and select Enable.

Thank you for your reply, but I have already tried that too - even through CMD...
Didn't help either...

Things you could try:
- Boot is safe mode and try to update
- Disable antivirus and Windows Firewall

Why didn't I think of that?!!

I have now tried several different ways with safe mode, still no success.

I'm at a point where I (if it was my computer) would throw it out the window...

Contacted Samsung last week, they "couldn't" help since it's not a hardware issue... :-/

It's a difficult issue, some had success by manually updating Windows Defender. Open up the GUI of Defender and click Update. After a reboot, try again (might or might not work)
